Niners Adamant Nick Bosa Won't Be Traded, Envision Deal Soon

Aug 31, 2023 6:52 AM

The San Francisco 49ers remain confident they'll sign Nick Bosa to a lucrative contract extension and that there's no scenario in which they would trade the defensive end.

Kyle Shanahan said recently that Bosa's extension negotiations have gone about how he expected, even though Bosa has not been with the team since it opened training camp July 25.

"I thought it would come probably at this time, just looking at the history of those things," Shanahan said. "And I'm really hoping it gets done. I know they're working tirelessly at it ... but hopefully we can get him in here sooner than later."

Asked if there was even a percentage chance he'd consider trading Bosa, John Lynch minced no words.

"No," Lynch said. "Real simple."

49ers Unsure Of Kicking Duties After Multiple Injuries

Aug 26, 2023 8:27 PM

With little more than two weeks left until the regular-season opener, the San Francisco 49ers have little idea who will handle kicking duties against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

That's because, in the span of three days, both of the team's kickers --rookie Jake Moody (right quadriceps) and veteran Zane Gonzalez (right calf) -- suffered injuries to their kicking legs that cast doubt on their availability for Week 1.

Roughly two and a half years after the San Francisco 49ers drafted him to be their franchise quarterback, Trey Lance's time with the team is over.

Sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter that the Niners agreed to trade Lance to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for a fourth-round draft choice early Friday evening.

GM John Lynch: Trey Lance 'Most Likely' To Remain With 49ers

Aug 24, 2023 4:42 PM

One day after learning that he had lost out on the San Francisco 49ers backup quarterback job, Trey Lance was back at the team facility Thursday.

Barring a surprise, that's exactly where Niners general manager John Lynch expects Lance to be reporting to work for the near future.

Speaking to KNBR radio in San Francisco on Thursday morning, Lynch said that although the Niners are exploring all options -- including a trade -- for Lance, there's still a strong chance Lance will remain with the team as its third quarterback going into the season.

Trey Lance's Future With 49ers Uncertain With Sam Darnold Named Backup

Aug 23, 2023 5:30 PM

The San Francisco 49ers have decided to name Sam Darnold the backup quarterback to Brock Purdy, which leaves the future of Trey Lance in limbo.

The 49ers selected Lance with the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft. After backing up Jimmy Garoppolo as a rookie, Lance won the starting job last season. But Lance suffered a broken right ankle in Week 2 and missed the rest of the season.

John Lynch said before the NFL draft in April that he'd received interest from other teams about a possible trade for Lance. At the time, Lynch said it would take something "substantial" to part ways with Lance.

"Yeah, I think there's a lot of smoke really," Lynch said in April. "It hasn't been extremely active and it's not like we've put it out there that, 'Hey, we're taking offers for Trey.' That's not been the process. ... It hasn't been that substantive."

On Tuesday, Shanahan noted the improvements he has seen from Lance.

"This offseason was just kind of getting healthy again and redefining how he throws, getting his balance," Shanahan said. "I think Trey from when he got hurt to where he is now, I think it helped him."

Kyle Shanahan Applauds Trey Lance For Handling Criticism

Aug 17, 2023 8:31 AM

Trey Lance may not have an assured future with the San Francisco 49ers, but Kyle Shanahan is still praising the quarterback.

Shanahan has appreciated how Lance has handled immense expectations after the Niners traded a lot of draft capital to get him. The expectation is that Brock Purdy will be the team's starting quarterback in 2023.

"It just goes with the territory. It goes with it for quarterbacks, it goes with it for anybody who's a high draft pick, but especially a quarterback," Shanahan said.

"That's one of the tough things I think for that position, but also for high draft picks. You watch receivers come in the league and they have a few drops early in camp and there becomes a lot of pressure on them. People want to see those people take off and do it right away and have no flaws and that's just part of it."

The Niners haven't given up on Lance, but view Purdy as a better option.

"Trey is extremely smart, very socially aware. He knows how the world works," Shanahan said. "And so, he does his best, which I think he does a damn good job of trying to block all that out and just focus on getting better. And I think that's what he has done so far."

Brock Purdy Cleared For Practice Without Off-Day

Aug 14, 2023 6:48 PM

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy cleared one more significant obstacle on his road to starting in the team's Sept. 10 season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Purdy will now be able to participate in three practices in a row without a built-in off-day, coach Kyle Shanahan announced during his conference call Monday. It's another important step in Purdy's recovery from offseason elbow surgery.

Brock Purdy Unlikely To Play In Preseason Opener

Aug 8, 2023 1:26 AM

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy's first preseason snaps in a game will likely have to wait until at least the Niners' second preseason contest set for Aug. 20 against the Denver Broncos. If they happen at all.

That's because the plan, for right now, is for Purdy to handle his usual duties as the starting quarterback in joint practices Thursday and Friday with the Las Vegas Raiders but not in the preseason opener Sunday at Allegiant Stadium.
