Deebo Samuel Doesn't Regret Calling James Bradberry 'Trash'

Nov 28, 2023 8:50 AM

Deebo Samuel stands behind the comments he made about Philadelphia Eagles cornerback James Bradberry last season.

"I don't regret nothing I said," said Samuel, who called Bradberry "trash."

Following the San Francisco 49ers' loss to the Eagles in the NFC Championship Game, Samuel went on the "I Am Athlete" podcast. The panel asked Samuel where the holes were in the Eagles defense.

"Where are the holes?" Samuel said. "The back end. The D-line makes both of them All-Pros. Besides [Darius] Slay, I respect Slay. Did you see the play Brandon [Aiyuk] had? The second play of the game when [Brock] Purdy got hurt? The separation, it’s just. . . ."

LeSean McCoy asked specifically about Bradberry, which prompted Samuel's "trash" response.

Brock Purdy Posts Perfect Passing Rating In 49ers Win

Nov 20, 2023 1:01 AM

Roughly 30 minutes after becoming the first San Francisco 49ers quarterback in history to attempt 20 or more passes and post a perfect 158.3 passer rating in the same game, Brock Purdy had multiple thoughts.

First, Purdy was proud to etch his name in the record book and have it mentioned along with Joe Montana, who is the only other Niners starter to achieve a perfect rating in a game with at least 10 attempts, a feat he accomplished in 1989. Second, Purdy pointed out that just because the passer rating goes no higher doesn't mean he believes it was a "perfect" game.

Seahawks Unsure If QB Geno Smith Will Play Thursday

Nov 20, 2023 12:56 AM

An injury to Geno Smith's right elbow and an ill-timed communication issue inside his helmet led to another Seattle Seahawks defeat at the hands of the Los Angeles Rams.

Smith went down near the end of the third quarter when he took a hard hit to his throwing arm. He missed the remainder of that possession and two more before he returned for the final drive, getting Seattle in position for a potential winning field goal that Jason Myers missed from 55 yards out.

The Seahawks' 17-16 loss dropped them to 6-4 and a full game behind the 7-3 49ers in the NFC West after their win Sunday. Smith's injury, meanwhile, puts his status for Thursday night's game against San Francisco at Lumen Field in question.

49ers' Talanoa Hufanga Feared To Have ACL Tear

Nov 19, 2023 9:54 PM

San Francisco 49ers safety Talanoa Hufanga sustained a right knee injury against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers that could keep him out well beyond Sunday's game.

Hufanga will have further tests on the knee on Monday morning, but coach Kyle Shanahan indicated after the Niners' 27-14 win that the organization is bracing for an ACL injury that could mean the end of Hufanga's 2023 season.

"We'll find out tomorrow on that," Shanahan said. "We don't know for sure. Most likely it's ACL but can't confirm it so we'll find out later."

Christian McCaffrey's TD Streak Ends

Nov 12, 2023 7:21 PM

Based on how 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey stepped to the podium after Sunday's resounding win over the Jaguars, it would have been difficult to tell that he had just narrowly missed a chance to own the NFL record for consecutive games with a touchdown all to himself.

Instead, McCaffrey actually had some material ready for the inevitable questions that followed his 17-game touchdown streak ending on the same day as his team's three-game losing streak with a 34-3 victory against the Jaguars.

"I suck," McCaffrey said, a smile creeping across his face. "Everyone else on the team scored. Except me."

Chase Young Trade Completed After Commanders Lowered Asking Price

Nov 12, 2023 11:46 AM

The 49ers went looking for big names at the NFL trade deadline, checking on the availability of Broncos cornerback Pat Surtain II, Bears cornerback Jaylon Johnson and then-Commanders defensive end Montez Sweat, among others, sources told ESPN.

The cost of all three players ultimately turned out to be too high for the 49ers, who thought that they wouldn't be able to make a deal to improve their team with just hours remaining before the 4 p.m. ET deadline on Oct. 31.

The Commanders, however, lowered their asking price for defensive end Chase Young after some teams expressed medical concerns about him, according to sources.

Niners Expect Chase Young To Have Big Role In Week 10

Nov 9, 2023 9:11 AM

Kyle Shanahan expects Chase Young to play a large role for the San Francisco 49ers this Sunday after the team traded for the defensive end during their bye week.

"I think he's going to jump in right away," Shanahan said. "First time we saw him was Monday. We had a slight small practice, and we'll see him out there [Wednesday] really for a real practice. Hopefully he'll pick up the stuff throughout the week and going to be out there a good bit on Sunday."

Asked whether he hopes to have a "big role" for Young, Shanahan said, "Yes, hope so."

49ers DC Steve Wilks Moving From Booth To Field

Nov 8, 2023 6:07 PM

Amidst a surge of defensive struggles over their past three games, the San Francisco 49ers have been searching for answers to get back to the dominant unit that spearheaded a 5-0 start.

The Niners made their biggest move last week, trading a compensatory third-round pick to the Washington Commanders for defensive end Chase Young. They're making another, much smaller move this week in the form of an elevator ride.

San Francisco defensive coordinator Steve Wilks, who is in his first year with the team, will move from the coach's booth upstairs to field level to call Sunday's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, coach Kyle Shanahan announced Wednesday.
