Brock Purdy led the San Francisco 49ers to a win over the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday night despite playing with an oblique/ribs injury that left his status up in the air until hours before kickoff.

Kyle Shanahan said after the game that he wasn't sure if Purdy would be able to make it through the whole game even if he started.

"He's definitely the most poised rookie I've ever had. He's been like that since he's gotten here," Shanahan said.

"He was poised all week, even with him being unsure of whether he'd be able to go or not. ... And under the circumstances, we didn't have any other choices, we were going to see how long he could last, and we were ready to go with [backup] Josh [Johnson]. But he just got comfortable, he got better as the game went, and it was pretty unbelievable."

For the first time since 2019, the San Francisco 49ers are NFC West division champions.

And though Lumen Field has been something of a house of horrors for them for the past decade-plus, it also has been the site of their two most recent hat-and-T-shirt celebrations.

This time, the Niners wrapped up the NFC West on Thursday night against the Seattle Seahawks with a resounding 21-13 victory. When they claimed the division crown in 2019, that clinch also happened in Seattle.

Deebo Samuel suffered a sprain to his MCL and ankle during the San Francisco 49ers' Week 14 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Samuel is expected to return during the regular season.

Samuel has caught 54 balls for 612 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing 41 times for 228 yards and three touchdowns.

The injury was initially announced as a knee, but later changed to an ankle.

The timeline for a return on a high ankle sprain is typically 4-6 weeks. The first round of the playoffs starts in five weeks.

The San Francisco 49ers might get Jimmy Garoppolo back this season after all.

Garoppolo did not suffer a Lisfranc injury to his broken left foot and will not need surgery. If his rehabilitation goes well, he has a chance to return in seven to eight weeks, according to sources.

That means the quarterback might be able to return depending on how far the Niners advance in the postseason.

Despite losing Jimmy Garoppolo to injury on Sunday, Kyle Shanahan says he'd be surprised if the San Francisco 49ers added Baker Mayfield this week.

The Carolina Panthers released Baker Mayfield on Monday. For the Niners to acquire Mayfield, he would have to fall to their spot in the waiver wire (No. 24) or clear waivers and sign as a free agent.

Adam Schefter reports that Mayfield is expected to be claimed.

"We look into everything, but that would surprise me right now," Shanahan said of Mayfield. "We've got to discuss more this afternoon and stuff. I've always been a fan of his, but I feel really good about our players. We'll look into everything, but I feel pretty good with where we're at right now."

The Carolina Panthers have waived Baker Mayfield. Mayfield requested his release. 

Mayfield is 1-5 in six starts this season for the Panthers, with a QBR of 18.2

The San Francisco 49ers have an obvious need at quarterback following the season-ending injury to Jimmy Garoppolo. 

The San Francisco 49ers have signed Josh Johnson off the practice squad of the Denver Broncos.

The 49ers lost Jimmy Garoppolo to a season-ending foot injury on Sunday.

Johnson has been a member of 14 different teams during his 13-year career. Johnson was previously with the 49ers in 2014 and 2020-21.

Jimmy Garoppolo suffered a broken foot in the San Francisco 49ers' 33-17 win over the Miami Dolphins and will miss the remainder of the season. 

Garoppolo will undergo surgery to repair the foot.

With 11 minutes, 22 seconds left in the opening quarter, Dolphins linebacker Jerome Baker and end Jaelan Phillips converged on Garoppolo for a sack. Garoppolo attempted to keep his momentum moving forward, and his left foot got caught under Phillips as he was taken down.

Brock Purdy replaced Garoppolo in the game.

The 49ers are already without Trey Lance, who suffered a right fibula fracture in Week 2.

The Miami Dolphins were in the mix to trade for Jimmy Garoppolo this past offseason, the quarterback says.

"They were in the conversation," Garoppolo said. "Not much came from it, but they were definitely one of the teams in the conversation. It seemed like a good spot. As an offense, that's tremendous skillplayers, everything they got going over there. Mike {McDaniel] being a great coach, I had been with him in the past here and it was discussed, but I'm glad the way things worked out."

Garoppolo remained with the San Francisco 49ers after offseason shoulder surgery and regained his starting role when Trey Lance suffered a season-ending injury.
