Kyle Shanahan Surprised Some Were Expecting 49ers To Use Two-QB System

Sep 29, 2021 9:29 PM

Kyle Shanahan suggested people misinterpreted his intentions when he previously indicated the San Francisco 49ers would use a two-quarterback system with both Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance.

“Trey’s our backup quarterback,” Shanahan told reporters. “This isn’t the preseason. We’re not just going back and forth all the time. Trey goes in for specific plays or things we want to do. Trey week in and week out, he gets better each week the more reps he gets on scout team. But there’s not a big decision going into that each week. We put in a game plan for our starting quarterback, the backup needs to be able to do all of that if he gets hurt. And what’s cool about Trey is because of his different skillset we always keep him alive with a couple of plays on situations.”

Shanahan was asked why he changed his mind on using both quarterbacks more extensively.

“I didn’t change my mind,” Shanahan insisted. “We have put him on the field. We do it in situations. You can go with whatever you want what I say in training camp and you can expand on that or not. But I think I was asked coming off the field of our third game if we’d see this in the regular season, I said, ‘Probably not.’ So, I think a lot of words have been put in my mouth with some of that stuff or exaggerated pretty big. So, I pretty much keep it pretty real to everyone, but I don’t just tell everyone the answer. I have no problem with you guys overdoing that and Detroit working on that extremely hard. But I’ve been pretty consistent with what I’ve said.”

Garoppolo doesn't like the two-quarterback system and he continues to have the locker room behind him. The 49ers have decided to continue featuring Garoppolo unless he gets injured.

Aaron Rodgers Top Choice For Trade Was 49ers

Sep 26, 2021 8:30 AM

The San Francisco 49ers were the first choice of Aaron Rodgers this past offseason as he sought a trade.

The 49ers reached out to the Green Bay Packers about a trade for Rodgers before they traded up to eventually select Trey Lance.

During media availability this week, Rodgers was asked if he thought the 49ers would trade for him, he admitted he pondered it.

"There were points where I thought anything was possible," Rodgers said this week. "Definitely. But not a strong possibility."

After the 49ers traded up to draft Lance, the Denver Broncos emerged as a possible destination.

Jimmy Garoppolo Might Talk To Aaron Rodgers About Handling Future

Sep 22, 2021 9:05 AM

Jimmy Garoppolo might discuss how to handle his uncertain future as the quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers with this week's opponent -- Aaron Rodgers.

Rodgers expressed his displeasure with the Packers this offseason before reporting to camp.

Garoppolo's financial situation is different than Rodgers' was heading into this season. He has one more year on his contract, set to earn $24.2 million in base salary, but none of it is guaranteed. The lack of guarantees led most to believe the 49ers would move on from the QB this year after drafting Trey Lance or at least try to get him to take a pay cut.

"Yeah, there's a good possibility," Garoppolo said of contacting Rodgers. "I know Aaron pretty well. We've talked a couple of times on the field, off the field. Whatever little piece of advice he could give to me. ... Obviously, it's worked out pretty well for him. The guy's been ballin'. He had four TDs [last] night.

"This league's a crazy thing. We've all got our own story and just got to make the best of your situation."

Three San Francisco RBs Suffer Injuries

Sep 20, 2021 9:37 AM

The San Francisco 49ers saw three running backs go down with injuries in their 17-11 win over the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday afternoon.

The injuries came after they lost starter Raheem Mostert to a season-ending knee injury in Week 1.

First, it was starter Elijah Mitchell's right shoulder, then it was an ankle injury for JaMycal Hasty, and finally it was a concussion for Trey Sermon.

The Niners finished with 117 yards on 38 carries, an average of just 3.1 yards per attempt.

The San Francisco 49ers have lost Raheem Mostert for about eight weeks because of "chipped cartilage" in his knee. The injury requires arthroscopic surgery and lands Mostert on injured reserve.

Elijah Mitchell had 19 carries for 104 yards for the 49ers while JaMycal Hasty had a touchdown.

Trey Sermon was inactive after spending most of the preseason backing up Mostert.

49ers Feared Patriots Would Trade Ahead Of Them In Draft

Sep 12, 2021 4:21 PM

The San Francisco 49ers traded up to No. 3 in the draft with fear the New England Patriots would leapfrog them to select Mac Jones.

The 49ers considered the well-documented relationship between Bill Belichick and Nick Saban and knew that New England was doing legwork on the quarterback prospects in the draft.

San Francisco ultimately decided Trey Lance was its preferred quarterback, and Jones wound up with New England at the 15th pick anyway

Jimmy Garoppolo Confirms He's 49ers' Starting QB

Sep 9, 2021 9:11 AM

Kyle Shanahan won't officially reveal who will start at quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers in Week 1, but Jimmy Garoppolo is being far more open about it.

"For a while," Garoppolo said when asked when he was told he'd be the 49ers' starter. "I told you guys a long time ago, I had a pretty good feeling about it. Kind of joked about it, but yeah, I always kind of knew where I stood and everything. And yeah, now it's official, I guess."

The 49ers used a lot of draft capital on Trey Lance in this year's NFL Draft.

Jimmy Garoppolo Listed As Starter On 49ers Initial Depth Chart

Sep 8, 2021 9:00 AM

The San Francisco 49ers have listed Jimmy Garoppolo as their starting quarterback on their initial regular season depth chart.

Given that Garoppolo, not rookie Trey Lance, will do the midweek press conference, it was already assumed that Garoppolo will be the starter.

San Francisco invested three first-round picks and a third-round pick to get Lance in this year's draft.
