49ers Expect Nick Bosa To Be Ready For Training Camp

May 26, 2021 8:41 AM

Nick Bosa was not in attendance at the San Francisco 49ers' voluntary practice session on Tuesday, but the team expects the defensive end to be ready when training camp opens on July 31.

Bosa tore his left ACL on Sept. 20, 2020.

"Nick's in Florida," Kyle Shanahan said. "I've been talking to Nick since February on this. He came out in February for a while to get checked up on his knee and stuff. With him coming off the ACL and everything, it's going great. ... He's got a good setup out there with his brother and the guy who works with his knee. They're in contact with our guys all the time and just didn't want to take him off his routine right now. I totally agree with him out there. He's going to show up at some time during this, but he won't be going out there doing anything coming off the ACL, but we fully expect him to be ready for training camp."

John Lynch: 49ers Have 'Been Upfront' With Jimmy Garoppolo

May 20, 2021 8:21 AM

Jimmy Garoppolo wasn't caught off guard by the San Francisco 49ers' decision to draft Trey Lance with the third overall pick last month.

The 49ers kept Garoppolo informed throughout the process as they traded up to No. 3 for a quarterback.

"I think Jimmy's got a really good trust in myself and Kyle," John Lynch said. "I think you earn that, and I think from day one, we've been very upfront with Jimmy. When I went to Jimmy, I told him the truth. Like, 'Look, we have made a decision that we're going to pursue a quarterback this offseason. You know, Jimmy, when you've played, you've been tremendous, and the record speaks to that. We feel like there's room for growth. The biggest thing has been it's hard to keep you on the field.' That's not an easy thing to tell a player, but Jimmy took it tremendously."

Lynch also reiterated that he told Garoppolo that the 49ers planned to keep him in San Francisco despite trade rumors. The quarterback is due a base salary of $24.1 million in 2021.

Jimmy Garoppolo 'More Than Happy' To Help Trey Lance

May 4, 2021 4:55 PM

Jimmy Garoppolo spoke publicly on Tuesday for the first time since the San Francisco 49ers drafted Trey Lance at No. 3 overall.

Garoppolo began his career backing up Tom Brady, which will shape his approach to working with Lance.

"It's kind of coming full circle," Garoppolo said. "You go through this NFL career and you start as a young guy coming in. Tom kind of showed me the ropes. The competition between us was awesome. It really made me grow as a rookie and as a young player. So, that's kind of what me and Trey, we'll mold our relationship into that. But it will happen naturally. It's one of those things you can't force anything. Just let it come as it may."

Garoppolo texted Lance soon after the 49ers drafted him.

"I try to use my own personal experiences and just what I went through, what helped me, what challenged me as a young player," Garoppolo said. "I'm going to use those tools that helped me and try to help Trey out. It's hard to come into this league; I know how it was coming from an FCS school to the NFL. It's a bit of an adjustment, the speed, whatever you want to call it, it's just different. So, whatever I can do to help him, I'll be more than happy."

Shanahan made it clear there was no timetable or definitive plan for Lance to take the starting job and that he expected Garoppolo, who is slated to count $26.1 million against the 2021 salary cap, to remain with the team and continue as the starter.

Kyle Shanahan Details Why 49ers Selected Trey Lance

May 3, 2021 1:30 PM

The San Francisco 49ers settled on Trey Lance as their pick at No. 3 on April 19th, several weeks after trading up to No. 3.

Kyle Shanahan was asked by Peter King how they decide upon Lance.

“It’s so hard for me to give a quick answer,” Shanahan said from California.

“His natural ability to play the quarterback position, just in terms of how he plays in the pocket, how he can go through the progressions, how, when no one’s open, that he gives it a chance, that he recognizes it. And how quick he reacts to turning it into an off-schedule play. He plays on tape like he’s a very poised, smart person who’s been playing the position for a while.

“Then you look into the other attributes, and you’re like ‘Oh, I haven’t even gotten to the running skill set.’ I haven’t gotten to the upside of how much better he can get, the more he plays. That’s what made me like him so much right away.

“But it’s also, once you do that, you see all this, now let’s talk about what’s wrong. Why isn’t this a slam dunk? You hear his school [level of play], the lack of throws, not playing the 2020 season. Those are real things. That’s why I’m glad that we had a long time to go through it. Because you love the tape, but just like everyone in the league, there are some stuff you can’t just say it’s a slam dunk. That’s the stuff that worries you about it. But that’s what was so cool about the kid, that going through this process after we moved up to where I talked to him so many times, to have him go through the number of tests and stuff that we have them all go through . . . I can’t tell you how special of a person he is. It has nothing to do with football.

“He’s extremely intelligent. He knows how to handle situations. He knows how to carry himself. The guy that I see on tape that I tried to describe that I see such a natural quarterback, such a smart player. Well, if I never saw the tape, and I got to hang out with him first, I would’ve felt that same way with him as a person and been like, ‘Man, I hope the tape matches this person!’ You know? That’s kind of what was cool about it. The first time you watch the tape, ‘Man, hell yeah!’ But no decision’s set in stone in January. That’s how I felt in January when I saw him. But I was going to do the process right. Watch everybody. Every guy. I can always spend two hours and get myself to like anyone. Then, I go to the time getting myself to not like him. And I see what ends up sticking. That’s what was cool about him through the process at the end. No matter what I tried to do to say, It’s too risky!, all that stuff kind of went away the more I got to know the person. I went back to how I originally felt about the tape.”

May 3, 2021 10:55 AM

Kyle Shanahan made headlines when asked about Jimmy Garoppolo leading up to the 2021 NFL Draft when he said that he "can't guarantee that anybody in the world will be alive Sunday, so I can't guarantee who will be on our roster on Sunday. So, that goes for all of us."

49ers Sought Frank Gore's Advice On No. 3 Pick

May 3, 2021 10:49 AM

The San Francisco 49ers sought out Frank Gore's advice before they selected Trey Lance with the third overall pick last week.

They had previously asked Gore to watch film on Lance.

"You don't give up all that for a pocket passer," Gore told NFL.com's Jim Trotter. "You don't give up all that and still need to call a perfect play for a guy. This guy can make plays even when the call ain't perfect. He has a chance to be special in that offense."
