San Francisco 49ers rookie quarterback Trey Lance has a small "chip" in a finger. Kyle Shanahan wouldn't specify which hand the injury is on.

Shanahan expects Lance to miss about seven days while the injury heals.

The 49ers open the season on Sept. 12 against the Detroit Lions.

Kyle Shanahan still isn't ready to announce who will start at quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers in Week 1, but he may have made the decision.

"I've got a pretty good idea," Shanahan said. "But as you guys can see with everything, I don't know our schedule a couple days from now. So, I've always had a pretty good idea. But there are lots of days between now and then, at every position."

Shortly after Shanahan's comments, Jimmy Garoppolo was asked if he'd been told whether he or rookie Trey Lance will start.

"I have a pretty good idea," Garoppolo said. "I'm pretty happy with where I'm at right now and everything and just the offense as a whole. Kyle's the head man. He'll make the call."

Shanahan said at the start of camp that he expected Garoppolo to start despite the presence of first-round pick Trey Lance.

"No, I'm not making that announcement. Nice try, though." Shanahan said following the team's preseason game on Sunday.

The coach noted he's not in any hurry to "name" a starting quarterback, but promised it'd come before the season opener on Sept. 12 against the Detroit Lions.

The San Francisco 49ers have waived Josh Rosen after a disappointing training camp.

San Francisco has Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo at quarterback.

Rosen, 24, played most of the second half in last week's preseason opener against the Kansas City Chiefs, going 10-of-15 for 93 yards with an interception in a 19-16 loss.

Mychal Kendricks will sign with the San Francisco 49ers ahead of the 2021 season, according to a report.

He was recently sentenced to one day in jail and three years of probation for his 2018 guilty plea on insider trading charges.

Kendricks will provide depth at linebacker for the 49ers.
