49ers Kept Decision On Trey Lance From Coaches, Scouts

Apr 29, 2021 9:06 PM

The San Francisco 49ers were very secretive about who they wanted with the third overall pick on Thursday night.

The front office, along with head coach Kyle Shanahan, didn't tell the team's coaching staff and scouts that Trey Lance would be the selection.

The 49ers were linked to Alabama quarterback Mac Jones for weeks after trading up to No. 3.

49ers Like Five QBs At No. 3 Overall Pick

Apr 27, 2021 1:25 PM

When the San Francisco 49ers traded up to No. 3, there were three quarterbacks they were comfortable drafting and they can now "get there" with Nos. 4 and 5.

Trevor Lawrence and Zach Wilson are expected to be selected first and second, which will leave the 49ers to decide between Mac Jones, Trey Lance and Justin Fields.

"We knew that there was three at the time," Kyle Shanahan said. "That's why we thought [No.] 3 was a good spot to go to. After going through this whole process, I felt good about five guys at [No.] 3. Yeah, we had a guy probably at first back then, but we knew that wasn't set in stone. And we knew the only way we could figure out a little bit more, especially when you can't work out guys, you can't meet with these people, there's a lot of things you can't do this year. The only way we could go off that is if we got closer to where we could do a little more in-depth thing that we didn't have to hide. We did. In that time, I think every candidate has gotten stronger. And yeah, we probably started with one in mind, but that one has gotten better since and so have all the other candidates."

The decision will ultimately fall to Shanahan and John Lynch.

"It's been an incredibly thorough process, but ultimately someone has got to be charged with making a decision and in this case, it's the both of us," Lynch said. "Everyone has in their contract 'you do this,' and the draft is mine, but I told Kyle from the beginning that he and I are doing this together. And when it comes to quarterbacks ... we have a head coach who is also our offensive playcaller, I will always defer to him. What's cool about that is I think Kyle respects my opinion enough, he always wants it and ultimately, we arrive at decisions, we will and come Thursday we have a pick that hopefully makes everyone proud. But that will be judged in years to come and we have done our best to make sure it's a great decision for this franchise."

49ers Shifting Focus To Mac Jones, Trey Lance With No. 3 Pick

Apr 26, 2021 11:06 AM

The San Francisco 49ers have narrowed their focus with the third overall pick to quarterbacks Mac Jones and Trey Lance, according to sources.

The report seemingly eliminates Justin Fields as a possibility.

Todd McShay reports that the 49ers' personnel department is pushing for Lance while Kyle Shanahan prefers Jones.

"One person I spoke to even heard that Shanahan might "acquiesce" to the scouting department on the selection, but others have said that seems unlikely," writes McShay.

The condition has not affected Fields on the field and his symptoms have been shorter and less frequent over the past few years.

Doctors believe Fields will outgrow it as his other family members have.

Fields is believed to be under consideration as high as the San Francisco 49ers at No. 3.

Jordan Reed Retires Due To Concussion Concerns

Apr 20, 2021 2:57 PM

Jordan Reed is retiring from the NFL after experiencing a number of concussions during his career.

"I was pretty sure I was going to keep playing; I was feeling good about where I was at," Reed told ESPN. "But then I had some lingering effects and sought out professional help to get diagnosed. They told me it was not a good idea to keep playing. I agreed with them."

Reed visited Orlando's Plasticity Center in late winter for a brain scan. He said based on the results it was recommended he retire. Reed said it took him a while to make the decision.

"Before when I had a concussion I would feel better afterwards and I wouldn't have lingering effects," Reed said. "If I didn't have any symptoms I would have kept playing," he said. "I'm OK with it because I know the reason why I'm making the choice is for family and my children, so I can be there for them. It's just time."

Reed caught 28 touchdowns and was one of the NFL's best tight ends when healthy.

49ers Offered First-Rounder For Sam Darnold

Apr 16, 2021 3:16 PM

The San Francisco 49ers reportedly offered the New York Jets their first-round pick -- 12th overall -- for Sam Darnold before he was dealt to the Carolina Panthers.

According to the report, the timing of the offer is a key reason the Jets didn't accept it.

The Jets were seemingly concerned about the shoulder of Zach Wilson at the time.

The 49ers didn't wait around, instead coming to terms on a deal with the Miami Dolphins allowing them to move up to third overall.
