Montana: Seahawks Could Be On Verge Of Dynasty

Sep 3, 2014 11:42 AM

Joe Montana believes the Seattle Seahawks may be on the verge of a dynasty due to how the team is built.

Montana played nearly his entire career with the San Francisco 49ers, though the Seahawks were in the AFC during his era.

“I think they have the capability to. When you look at the way the team is put together, they’re young, they’re aggressive; their coach is very aggressive and upbeat. Anytime you can make going to work fun, even though you’re playing as I say ‘a stupid game for a living,’ it makes going to that facility every day really a joy. When you’re having fun at what you’re doing, you’re always a lot better at it.”

Harbaugh Tells 49ers To Be Aware Of Surroundings

Jun 26, 2014 1:18 PM

Jim Harbaugh advised his players to be aware of their surroundings when off the field as the San Francisco 49ers broke minicamp.

"Beware with whom you associate," Harbaugh said of his message to players. "It's very important to know your surroundings. Friend or foe? There always seem to be a foe. Get in football position. See around corners, under doors, and anticipate. But mainly surround yourselves around good people."

Colin Kaepernick and Aldon Smith have had offseason issues.

49ers Expect To Throw More Frequently In 2014

Jul 2, 2014 10:18 AM

The San Francisco 49ers will pass more frequently as Colin Kaepernick begins his second full season as their starting quarterback.

The 49ers have ranked near the bottom of the NFL in pass attempts in all three of Jim Harbaugh's years with the franchise.

“We kind of went through everything we’ve done and really kind of stripped it back down to its most element basic parts and [started] over at square one. I would say, I think it’s fair to make the statement that it’s a different offense, 2014,” Roman said, via the San Francisco Chronicle. “Because we’ve got some new guys in, Brandon Lloyd has been out there everyday. He’s done a great job of taking advantage of his opportunities. Stevie Johnson’s another guy. So, we’ll see how it all goes.”

Eric Wright Retires From NFL At 28

Jun 30, 2014 12:28 PM

Eric Wright has decided to retire from the NFL and will file paperwork today with the league office to officially end his seven-year career.

Wright signed with the San Francisco 49ers last offseason.

“I believe he’s making a decision to not play football, as I understand it,” Jim Harbaugh said. “I have not talked to him.”

Wright’s decision ends a career that nosedived after he signed a five-year, $37.5 million contract with Tampa Bay in 2012. In his brief tenure with the Buccaneers, the former second-round pick was arrested for two DUIs and suspended four games for using performance-enhancing drugs.

Wright is just 28.

Vernon Davis: It's All About Getting Paid What You Deserve

Jun 17, 2014 5:42 PM

Vernon Davis detailed why he believes he deserves an extension from the San Francisco 49ers.

"In 2010 I signed a five-year, $37 million contract extension with $23 million guaranteed. It was the biggest contract for a tight end in league history," Davis wrote. "Four years later, and I'm playing at a higher level than I was then, which brings me to why I'm holding out. It's all about getting paid what you deserve. It's not that complicated. I want the 49ers to win the Super Bowl, and I want to be on the field this summer working towards that goal, but I have to worry about my future first."

Davis' stance on Monday appears to contradict what he's said in the past. On Thursday, he told a San Francisco radio station: "You know what? I plan on being there. I plan on being there."

Vernon Davis To Report To 49ers' Camp

Sep 2, 2014 7:41 PM

Vernon Davis plans on being present at the San Francisco 49ers' mandatory minicamp next week after missing voluntary sessions with his contract status in limbo.

"You know what? I plan on being there," Davis said Thursday in a radio interview with San Francisco station 95.7 The Game. "I plan on being there."

Davis told ESPN.com last week: "If it's mandatory, I think I should be there. My foot could get stuck in the grass, and I may not be able to get out ... but if it's mandatory, I think I should be there."

Newton Denies Being 'Terrified' Kaepernick Set Bar Too Low

Jul 13, 2014 10:47 PM

On Tuesday, the NFL Network reported that people close to Cam Newton are terrified that Colin Kaepernick's deal might set a standard for the Panthers to use in their dealings with the QB. Specifically, the report said Newton would want much more than the $13 million in guaranteed money Kaepernick received up front.

"I'm not terrified of anything,'' Newton said Wednesday in response.

The Carolina Panthers have the rights to Newton through the 2015 season, but they've expressed an interest in signing their franchise quarterback to a long-term deal. Negotiations have not begun.

Kaepernick signed a six-year deal worth $110 million earlier this month with the 49ers. The contract reportedly included a record $61 million in injury guarantees.

Kaepernick's Contract Could Make It Harder For 49ers To Sign Others

Jun 13, 2014 11:35 PM

With a small signing bonus, industry insiders believe the new contract of Colin Kaepernick may make it harder for the San Francisco 49ers to get deals done with other players.

Kaepernick said he hoped his deal would make it easier for the 49ers to sign other players.

Kaepernick received a signing bonus of $12,328,766 (to be exact) and a fully guaranteed 2014 base salary of $645,000 for this season. That works out to just less than $13 million fully guaranteed.

In comparison, guard Andy Levitre received $13 million guaranteed ($10.5 million signing bonus and $2.5 million fully guaranteed salary) in his deal with the Tennessee Titans in 2013. Logan Mankins (New England) got $21.5 million guaranteed, while Carl Nicks (Tampa Bay) and Jahri Evans (New Orleans) both received guarantees of $19 million.
