Prosecutors Leaning Against Charges For Ray McDonald

Nov 18, 2014 8:36 PM

Santa Clara County prosecutors are leaning against charging Ray McDonald with domestic violence in connection with his widely publicized arrest on suspicion of roughing up his pregnant fiancee, sources familiar with the case said Thursday.

McDonald's supporters have long insisted that the defensive end is a gentle giant who was merely putting up mild resistance Aug. 31 to ward off a physical attack by his fiancee. In late May, the woman grabbed a gun during an argument the couple had and left the house when McDonald threatened to call police. Officers responded to the call, but no arrests were made.

NaVorro Bowman Getting Closer To Return, Running Faster Than Ever

Nov 5, 2014 6:29 PM

NaVorro Bowman is getting closer to returning to the San Francisco 49ers' lineup and has somehow gotten faster as he recovers from his ACL injury.

“I talked to him the other day in the weight room before I left and he was all excited ‘cause he had gotten to run a full-speed 40 for the first time in a long time and broke the 4.5 range — it was in the 4.5 range,” Trent Baalke said, via Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com. “So he was all excited. But he’s coming along very well. When he’s set to return remains to be seen. But progressing well, as is Patrick (Willis).”

Bowman ran a 4.70 at the 2010 NFL Scouting Combine, and followed that up with a 4.62 at his pro day workout at Penn State.

49ers To Replace Daniel Kilgore With Marcus Martin

Oct 30, 2014 12:10 AM

Daniel Kilgore will miss the rest of the season with a left leg injury.

The San Francisco 49ers will give Marcus Martin a shot at center moving forward.

Martin was a third round pick out of USC.

“He’s excelled at the mental aspects,” Jim Harbaugh said. “Before and after he was injured, I’ve been real impressed with that. Even when he knew he was hurt and would be out multiple weeks, he didn’t ease off in the classroom or with his study. I think that bodes well.

“He’s a bright youngster, and he’s champed at the bit to get on the field. I’m excited about his progress and I look forward to good things.”

Aldon Smith Could Get Reduced Suspension

Oct 28, 2014 7:03 AM

Aldon Smith could receive a reduced suspension for good behavior.

Smith was suspended by the NFL for nine games before the season started under terms of the league's personal conduct and substance abuse policies. The San Francisco 49ers could get Smith back one or two games earlier.

Smith must maintain his good behavior for commissioner Roger Goodell to reduce the penalty.

Under terms of his suspension, the league has allowed Smith to be in the team's facility for meetings and conditioning, although he has not been allowed to practice with the team.

A reduction to Smith's suspension would not set a precedent, as other players, including Ben Roethlisberger and Brandon Marshall, have had similar suspensions reduced.

49ers Picked Baalke Over Harbaugh As No. 1 Guy Long Ago

Oct 31, 2014 5:57 PM

Trent Baalke has had control of personnel decisions for the San Francisco 49ers since January 2011 when he was promoted to general manager.

Baalke, along with Jed York, then made the decision to hire Jim Harbaugh as head coach.

While Harbaugh has been one of the NFL's most celebrated coaches since making the jump from Stanford, power of the 49ers has remained with Baalke.

Baalke has not been overruled by York on a single matter, according to Kawakami.

Baalke decided the 49ers would fully support Aldon Smith, as well as allowing Ray McDonald to continue playing after his domestic violence arrest.

"But in those early years, Harbaugh received almost all of the attention and he deserved to, because the 49ers needed an adrenaline shot most of all," writes Kawakami.

"Which Harbaugh obviously provided.

"Then, at some point along the line, the Yorks had to pick their No. 1 guy for the long-term, and it’s clear that Jed York picked Baalke over Harbaugh a while ago."

NaVorro Bowman's Return Still 'Later Than Sooner'

Nov 13, 2014 7:20 AM

NaVorro Bowman becomes eligible to come off the San Francisco 49ers' reserve/physically unable to perform list after Week 6, but he remains several weeks away from returning.

Bowman began sprinting last month.

"NaVorro's doing well in his rehab," Fangio told KNBR-AM, per NinersNation.com. "He still has to be out two more games at least, and he'll be out several after that. But he's doing well. He's had no road blocks in his rehab. Everything's gone smooth, he's ahead of where he should be, and we're looking forward to his return at some point."

Michael Wilhoite has been doing a strong job filling in for Bowman, who is an All-Pro inside linebacker.

"His procedure was done in February," Fangio said. "It's not like he got hurt in the middle of the season last year. His rehab has gone great, but you still need enough time to rehab and recover. And he's going to need a couple weeks of practice, too, to get his legs under him and to feel comfortable playing on his leg."

Harbaugh, York Meet Amid Continued Reports Of Rift

Oct 10, 2014 3:30 AM

Jim Harbaugh met with San Francisco 49ers' owner Jed York on Monday amid continued reports of a discord between players and coach.

"Jed stopped by today, we had a real good talk and keep moving forward, moving on to the [St. Louis] Rams and continue, everybody in the organization is doing their job," Harbaugh said.

"Everybody is working hard at the craft of helping us be the best we can possibly be as a football team and that's all you can ask of anybody. They're doing their best and nobody appreciates that like I do and I know that's what Jed appreciates.

"We work at the pleasure of the York Family and the San Francisco 49ers organization and that's our job, do the best we possibly can. And I see everybody doing that."

Harbaugh was asked if it was a typical meeting with York, or if it was needed to quell the outside noise.

"Typical," Harbaugh said. "Sometimes [we meet] in my office or his office or cafeteria, but everybody's doing their darndest right now, and that's all you can ask."
