Davante Adams, Packers Differ On Extension Amount

Aug 1, 2021 10:02 PM

The Green Bay Packers aren't opposed to making Davante Adams the highest-paid wide receiver in the NFL, but the two sides disagree on the definition of the term.

Adams and his representatives believe DeAndre Hopkins is currently the highest-paid receiver at $27.25 million per year.

The Packers, however, view Hopkins' deal as closer to $20 million annually. That's because Hopkins' deal with the Arizona Cardinals was an extension to his previous contract. He was on a five-year, $81 million deal. So while the new money -- two years and $54.5 million -- indeed averaged $27.25, there were three years remaining on his previous contract.

"I think there's a little bit with that particular situation, it's how you interpret what the highest receiver in the National Football League is getting paid, you know what I mean?" Brian Gutekunst said.

Among the concessions in the new contract:

• The 2023 year in his original contract is voided, making 2022 the final year on his contract.

• Forfeiture provisions were removed from the contract, preventing the Packers from pursuing prorated portions of Rodgers' signing bonus.

Rodgers reported to training camp on Tuesday and participated when practice opened Wednesday.

Aaron Rodgers Details Frustration With Packers During Press Conference

Jul 30, 2021 12:14 AM

Aaron Rodgers held a 32-minute press conference in which he went into detail about his tumultuous offseason with the Green Bay Packers. Rodgers said he considered retirement.

"I just want to be involved in conversations that affect my ability to do my job," Rodgers said.

When asked if he's gotten any assurances that it will happen, he said: "I'm not sure ... at this point."

Rodgers talked about players who were not retained such as Charles Woodson and Randall Cobb. Cobb is expected to be traded back to the Packers.

"I wanted to help the organization, maybe learn from the some of the mistakes in the past ... and about the way that some of the outgoing veterans were treated," Rodgers said. "And just the fact that we didn't retain a number of players that I felt like were core players to our foundation, to our locker room. High-character guys."
