Packers Suspend Jaire Alexander After Coin-Toss Confusion

Dec 28, 2023 9:42 AM

The Green Bay Packers have suspended Jaire Alexander for one game for what they called "conduct detrimental to the team."

On Sunday, Alexander anointed himself as one of the Packers' captains -- and then made what Matt LaFleur called "a big mistake" by nearly botching the call after winning the coin toss.

"The decision to suspend a player is never easy and not one we take lightly," Brian Gutekunst said in a statement. "Unfortunately, Jaire's actions prior to the game in Carolina led us to take this step. As an organization, we have an expectation that everyone puts the team first. While we are disappointed, we had a good conversation with Jaire this morning and fully expect him to learn from this as we move forward together. We look forward to welcoming him back next week as he is a valued member of this team and will continue to be in the future."

Alexander, who grew up in Charlotte, walked to midfield before the game with the Packers' three game captains -- Aaron Jones, Quay Walker and Eric Wilson. The Packers did not elect season-long captains this year, instead using a weekly rotation.

Alexander called tails and won the toss. He then said the Packers wanted to be on defense, which is not the same as choosing to defer their choice to the second half. Referee Alex Kemp could have taken Alexander's call to mean they wanted to kick off, which then would have allowed Carolina to receive the ball to start both halves. However, because LaFleur, in the pregame meeting with the officials, informed Kemp that the Packers would defer if they won the toss, Kemp clarified that Alexander wanted to defer.

"That was a big mistake," LaFleur said after the game of Alexander's call. "That's something that you review with the guys before they go out there every time about, 'Hey, we win the toss, we're going to defer.' I went to the officials before the game, made sure they knew what we were going to do. We had an incident earlier this year where we had a similar situation, so always trying to be proactive in that approach."

Packers Sticking With Joe Barry As Defensive Coordinator

Dec 19, 2023 8:23 AM

The Green Bay Packers got carved up by Baker Mayfield on Sunday but that won't lead to any changes on defense.

Matt LaFleur indicated that oft-criticized Joe Barry would remain as the defensive coordinator and playcaller for at least the remainder of the season.

"Yeah, that is the plan," said LaFleur, who in his five seasons as head coach has never made an in-season coaching change.

The Packers (6-8) will likely be in a must-win situation during each of the final three games to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Baker Mayfield Becomes First QB With Perfect Rating At Lambeau Field

Dec 18, 2023 10:27 AM

Baker Mayfield made history in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' 34-20 win over the Green Bay Packers on Sunday.

Mayfield became the first opposing quarterback to post a perfect 158.3 passer rating at Lambeau Field as he went 22-for-28 with 381 yards and four touchdowns.

The only other quarterback to post a perfect rating at Lambeau was Aaron Rodgers in 2019.

"He's meant everything," coach Todd Bowles said of Mayfield. "From a mental standpoint to a quarterback standpoint, making plays. From a toughness standpoint. From a leadership standpoint. He's done everything. He's checked all the boxes. He's doing all the right things now and I can't say enough about him."

NFL Officiating Crew Under Scrutiny Over Missed Calls

Dec 10, 2023 12:43 AM

The officiating crew that did not call a blatant and potentially game-deciding pass interference penalty during Sunday night's game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Green Bay Packers game missed a similar call one week earlier in Atlanta on a play that harkened back to one of the most controversial non-calls in NFL history.

Jordan Love Had Kansas City Game 'Circled For A Long Time'

Dec 4, 2023 9:02 AM

Jordan Love faced the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday night for the first time since Nov. 7, 2021 -- his first NFL start -- and led the Green Bay Packers to a 27-19 victory.

Love made that start two years ago because Aaron Rodgers was sidelined with COVID-19. He crumbled against the blitz as the Chiefs won 13-7 at Arrowhead Stadium.

Steve Spagnuolo tried a similar strategy Sunday and Love masterfully sidestepped it, showing just how far he has come 12 games into his first season as Green Bay's full-time starting quarterback.

"Yeah, it's huge," said Love, who finished 25-of-36 passing for 267 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions. "For me personally, obviously I've had this game circled for a long time. My first start, obviously, didn't play how I wanted to the first game. So to be able to see these guys again and get the victory is huge. It's just a great team win tonight. Everybody just balled out, so it was an awesome win."
