The Green Bay Packers did not alter the contract of Aaron Rodgers this past Friday and paid his $6.8 million roster bonus as is rather than converting it into a signing bonus. The move would have freed up more than $4.5 million in salary cap space, but it would have pushed that money to future seasons.
"It vested Friday like it was scheduled to," the source said.
The move was perhaps a signal that the Packers don't want to count any more dead money than they already would have if they moved on from Rodgers after the 2021 season.
The two sides could still possibly agreed to a reworked deal or an extension.
Multiple league sources said they believe Rodgers wants assurances that he will be Green Bay's quarterback beyond just the 2021 season and that he won't be a "lame-duck" quarterback.
The Green Bay Packers are working on restructuring the contract of Aaron Rodgers to free up cap space.
It is unclear if the Packers will make the move in a way that will give Rodgers confidence that the team is committed to him beyond 2021.
The Packers drafted Jordan Love in the first round last year.
Aaron Jones is sticking with the Green Bay Packers after agreeing to a four-year, $48 million deal that includes a $13 million signing bonus.
Drew Rosenhaus announced the deal but added: "We anticipated bigger offers in free agency but Aaron wanted to stay with the Packers."
The NFL's legal tampering period for free agents doesn't open until Monday afternoon, but Rosenhaus likely monitored what the market for his client would be.
Aaron Jones has reached agreement with the Green Bay Packers on a four-year, $48 million deal that includes a $13 million signing bonus.
"We anticipated bigger offers in free agency, but Aaron wanted to stay with the Packers," Drew Rosenhaus told ESPN.
The Packers risked losing Jones by not using the franchise tag on him.
Jones, a fifth-round pick by the Packers out of UTEP in 2017, ranked fourth in the NFL last season with 1,104 rushing yards despite missing two games with a calf injury.
The Green Bay Packers didn't place the franchise tag on Aaron Jones, but multiple reports indicate they still want to re-sign the running back.
However, the Packers aren't willing to offer Jones top-tier running back pay to do so.
Jones has been offered "more than $9 million per year" from the Packers, according to a report. Jones, however, is believed to want something closer to the NFL's top running backs. Dalvin Cook, Derrick Henry and Joe Mixon make in the $12 million to $13 million range.
The Green Bay Packers decided not to place the franchise tag on Aaron Jones.
The Packers still hope to re-sign Jones before free agency begins.
The tag would have cost the Packers about $8 million. They're currently about $10.6 million over their projected salary cap and will have to make roster moves or restructure existing contracts to get under the limit by next week's March 17 deadline.
Matt LaFleur says he should have communicated better with Aaron Rodgers late in the Green Bay Packers' NFC Championship Game loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The two plays that stand out late were Rodgers' decision to throw when he had room to run on third-and-goal from the 8-yard line and then the decision to kick a field goal instead of go for it.
"One thing you definitely learn: I know my communication with [Rodgers] should have been better in that situation," LaFleur said. "Maybe on that third down we do something a little bit different. His mindset was, We got four downs here. It comes down to communication, and that's something I gotta learn from and be better with him."
