John Schneider Asks Seattle To 'Trust The Process'

Mar 31, 2018 5:59 PM

The Seattle Seahawks are undergoing a significant reset this offseason and John Schneider is asking their fans for patience.

"It's a constant reset every single year, it doesn't stop," Schneider told ESPN 710 AM in Seattle on Friday. "When I say 'reset' people are like, 'Well it's a rebuild.' We're not rebuilding; it's just a reset."

The Seahawks were 9-7 last season but missed out on the playoffs for the first time since Russell Wilson was drafted in 2012.

"We've got some pretty good players on this football team," Schneider said. "And there's a lot of young players that people don't necessarily -- they haven't heard their names yet ... Tedric Thompson was one of our best special teams players this last year. He didn't get to play much at strong safety. Kam was one of our best special teams players the first year he played. He didn't get to play strong safety because Lawyer [Milloy] was here. Trust the process, man."

Seahawks Cut Trevone Boykin After Alleged Domestic Violence Incident

Mar 27, 2018 4:23 PM

The Seattle Seahawks have released quarterback Trevone Boykin following a report he is under investigation for an alleged domestic violence incident.

Shabrika Bailey told WFAA that Boykin attempted to choke her and broke her jaw in two places during an incident that occurred at his home last week. She said she blacked out while Boykin was attempting to choke her and then came to in a "puddle of blood on the kitchen floor."

Bailey said Boykin drove her to Dallas Regional Medical Center in Mesquite, Texas, and that he fled when hospital staff began questioning the two separately.

Boykin called Bailey's allegations "false."

"I understand the Seahawks' decision to release me. The story that was reported casts a bad light on the organization and on me. I want to be clear that the story is false. The police have taken statements from the accuser, another witness and me. All of these statements confirm that I was not involved in the physical altercation. This woman has lied about me and it has cost me my job. I know guilt by association is real. This person has fabricated a story and I am suffering the consequences. I will let the legal system run its course and I know I will be vindicated," he said.

Seahawks Refute Notion They're Rebuilding

Mar 27, 2018 10:28 AM

John Schneider has attempted to refute the notion that the Seahawks are rebuilding this offseason.

The Seahawks have parted ways this offseason with Michael Bennett, Jimmy Graham, Richard Sherman, Sheldon Richardson and Paul Richardson. The Seahawks could also part with Earl Thomas.

"It's just always very, very hard to make those decisions to move on from people, but that's what we have to do in order to be a consistent championship-caliber football team," Schneider said, according to The Seattle Times. "We don't want to be having these major rebuilding years. We want to be able to have little resets, if you will."

When asked if the Seahawks are rebuilding, Schneider said, "No, no," then mentioned four of the Pro Bowl players who remain on Seattle's roster: middle linebacker Bobby Wagner, left tackle Duane Brown, wide receiver Doug Baldwin and quarterback Russell Wilson.

"There's a pretty cool group of guys, and I'm leaving guys out, I know," Schneider said. "It's not like 2010, when we felt like we had to make these sweeping changes. We've been here since 2010, and it feels like we've just constantly been doing this every single year. It's not like we have this, 'OK, season's over, now we're going to do A, B and C.' We're working all the way through the year."

Earl Thomas On Future: It's A Guessing Game

Mar 25, 2018 11:07 AM

Earl Thomas could join Richard Sherman, Michael Bennett, Sheldon Richardson and others to leave the Seahawks this offseason.

"Hopefully I stay, but right now, nobody knows," Thomas said. "It's a guessing game, so we'll see."

Thomas is more likely to be traded than released.

"In my case, whether I'm in Seattle or anywhere else, I'm going to be rich and happy regardless," Thomas said. "So it's a cut-throat league, but if you're at the top of your game and you don't give them any reasons to devalue, you're good. That's just how I look at it."

Richard Sherman Defends Contract He Negotiated

Mar 20, 2018 7:07 PM

Richard Sherman defended the way he negotiated his contract with the 49ers.

"It was really important to me," said Sherman, who served as his own agent. "I think that a lot of times in our league there are players that have the ability to do that and have the ability to structure their own deals and really take advantage of just being in control of their own destiny.

"There are great agents in our game that take care of our players, make sure our players are ready for life after football, their finances, whatever the case may be. And then there are some agents who negotiate a deal in 2006 and don't talk to their client again until 2010, and that's the thing we're trying to avoid and I'm trying to avoid.

"I didn't feel like I needed an agent. I felt like I knew contracts well enough and I felt like coming off the Achilles [injury], there's going to be negotiation points, there's going to be give and takes on both sides and I felt comfortable with that."

Sherman's deal could be worth as much as $39.15 million over three years, but it would effectively only pay him that much if he returns to his All-Pro form after suffering a right Achilles injury.

Sherman received a $3 million signing bonus and also has a $2 million roster bonus he will receive if he can pass a physical before Nov. 11.

"The biggest misconception is that it's a bad deal," Sherman said. "If I'm basing it just going off my last year [of the deal] in Seattle, and you compare it, I got no money guaranteed and I'm coming off a ruptured Achilles. What security do I have there? ... That's really all that I wanted. And [if] I play at the level that I'm capable of, I feel security in the upcoming years and I feel comfortable with that and I'm great with it."

Sherman believes he's been held to a double standard compared to agents who do team-friendly contracts.

"I think the thing I'm most frustrated about is all the people that were so high on bashing this deal refuse to bash the agents that do awful deals every year," Sherman said. "There are agents out there that do a $3 million fully guaranteed deal that look like $50 million deals. When a guy gets cut after two weeks or after a year and the guy only makes $5 million off a $50 million contract, nobody sits there and bashes the agent.

"... So I think that this was just one of those things where the agents feel uncomfortable with the player taking the initiative to do his own deal. That obviously puts a fire under them, it makes them more accountable for their actions because more players will do this."

Sherman said he has heard from "a lot" of players around the league who intend to negotiate their own contracts.

Richard Sherman: Pete Carroll's Philosophy More Built For College

Mar 19, 2018 11:49 AM

Richard Sherman suggested Pete Carroll's culture might be better suited for college football than the NFL.

“A lot of us have been there six, seven, eight years, and his philosophy is more built for college. Four years, guys rotate in, rotate out, and so we had kind of heard all his stories," said Sherman on the ThomaHawk podcast. "We had kind of heard every story, every funny anecdote that he had. And honestly because he just recycles them.”

Sherman was released by the Seahawks this month and signed with the 49ers.

Richard Sherman: Pete Carroll's Message Better For College

Mar 16, 2018 9:17 AM

Richard Sherman believes that Pete Carroll's message with the Seattle Seahawks has become stale, especially with the team's longer-tenured players.

Sherman suggested that Carroll's approach works better in college, where rosters turnover often.

"I think it was kind of philosophical on his part," Sherman said of Carroll. "A lot of us have been there six, seven, eight years, and his philosophy is more built for college. Four years, guys rotate in, rotate out, and so we had kind of heard all his stories, we had kind of heard every story, every funny anecdote that he had. And honestly because he just recycles them. And they're cool stories, they're great for team chemistry and building, etcetera, etcetera. But we had literally heard them all. We could recite them before he even started to say them."

The Seahawks cut Sherman last week and he quickly agreed to terms with the San Francisco 49ers.

Seattle is seeking a first- and third-round pick for the safety. Any team willing to part with those types of picks would likely want to have an extension in place with Thomas before agreeing to a deal.

Thomas has one year left on the four-year, $40 million extension he signed after the 2013 season.
