John Lynch: 49ers Cap Situation 'Not Bleak'

Feb 11, 2020 7:55 AM

The San Francisco 49ers are coming off a Super Bowl appearance, but some are concerned about their cap situation.

John Lynch says the situation isn't dire, but admitted that some trade-offs will have to be made.

"Someone was asking me, 'Characterize our situation,'" Lynch said. "It's not bleak. It's not like some people where you have to cut players just to be able to meet certain deals. I think more so understanding that there are players that are really good players we want to take care of, knowing it is tight. There may have to be trade-offs along the way. But I think we're in a good position to find a way to certainly keep the core together and even, like I said, our mindset to improve it."

Kyle Shanahan Has No Regrets About Super Bowl Playcalling

Feb 7, 2020 9:03 AM

Kyle Shanahan has no regrets about his offensive play calls in the Super Bowl last Sunday.

The San Francisco 49ers led the Kansas City Chiefs by 10 points in the fourth quarter, but went on to lose.

"I personally thought we had the best team in the NFL this year," Shanahan said. "And we weren't, and we've got to deal with that. But I'm sure we believe we had that and we should have proved that and we didn't get that done. And that's what's really cool about sports, that's what hurts about sports, that's what's fun about sports. It's why I love sports and it's also why everyone likes watching it, because there is a lot of emotion in there and when I do feel this way and stuff, I mean it, it makes me feel stronger because it does hurt a lot. But I also know how much I can deal with it. And if that's the worst stuff that happens, I can't wait to try our butts off to get back there next year."

Feb 2, 2020 11:39 AM

The San Francisco 49ers are expected to move quickly in signing George Kittle to a contract extension that resets the market for tight ends.

"The Niners are going to make this a priority, try to get an extension done with Kittle quickly," Mike Garafolo said. "The top of the tight end market (is) about $10 million per year. He's going to blow the lid off of that. I would think you're looking at $13 million as the floor on this one."

Kittle has one year remaining on his rookie deal, which is set to pay him $735,000 in 2020.

Kittle was the top-rated player in 2019 by Pro Football Focus.
