Dee Ford Underwent 'Extensive' Knee Surgery After Super Bowl

May 29, 2020 3:47 PM

Dee For underwent extensive knee surgery following Super Bowl LIV.

Dr. James Andrew underwent the surgery on Ford's left knee.

"We were spot-on with the injury as far as diagnosing it in training camp," Ford said. "I had a severe case of tendinitis. ... With my position, that's a blown tire. I feel great right now. I'm able to actually explode off of this knee. Thinking back on it, I can't believe I played a whole season on it, and we knew at the end of the day what we had to do. It had to be surgical, but I didn't want to miss the season. We had too much going on. I didn't want to miss that. It's in the bag now, though, I'm confident in that."

Ford has said the knee (and corresponding quadriceps issue) plagued him for many of his previous six seasons in the NFL -- perhaps never more so than last season, his first in San Francisco.

John Lynch: 49ers Up Against Cap, Big Moves Unlikely

May 11, 2020 8:52 AM

The San Francisco 49ers will likely go into the season with the roster they currently have.

John Lynch said on a podcast appearance that he wouldn't rule anything out, but more major moves would be difficult with a difficult cap situation.

"There's always an opportunity to get better," Lynch said. "We do like where our roster is at. We're extremely happy with where it's at. I don't anticipate anything big coming — and we are kind of nudged up against the cap, as well. So there's really not a lot of room to go do things like that. That's for good reason. We have a lot of really good players and we're extremely excited about that."

49ers Would Have Been Comfortable Taking Brandon Aiyuk At No. 13

May 4, 2020 8:43 AM

The San Francisco 49ers entered the first round of last month's NFL Draft with picks No. 13 and 31, but after multiple trades they ended up with the 14th and 25th selections.

John Lynch says Brandon Aiyuk, who they took at the No. 25 pick, was a strong consideration when they held the 13th pick.

"I think it was two days before the draft, I said to Kyle [Shanahan], you know what? I know people might raise some eyebrows, but I really don't care. At 13, if we get stuck and we can't trade out, I'd be perfectly happy taking Aiyuk," Lynch said of the Arizona State wide receiver.

"And he said, I'm so glad you said that 'cause I feel the same way! I think we knew at that point that he had really become a guy that we had become intrigued with. I think the combination of strength and speed and separation ability and then the advantage, I think in a year like this, you have to trust relationships more than ever before. [Arizona State coach] Herm Edwards, he's the godparent to my youngest daughter. I'm his son's godparent. He coached me for a long time. One of my closest friends in the world. I called Herm and I said, 'Herm, give me the skinny on this kid.' One of the things he talked about is just how competitive and how important it was for Brandon to be great. That spoke to me and spoke to us."

49ers Won't Pick Up Fifth-Year Option On Solomon Thomas

May 1, 2020 11:48 AM

The San Francisco 49ers won't pick up their fifth-year option on Solomon Thomas.

Thomas was the third overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft and has been solid but hasn't lived up to his draft status.

After trading DeForest Buckner and drafting Javon Kinlaw, the 49ers maintained their four first rounder count on the defensive line.
