Joe Montana doesn't think the New England Patriots should have let Tom Brady get away.

"I don't know what's going on inside there, but somebody made a mistake," Montana told USA Today.

Montana finished his career with the Kansas City Chiefs after 14 seasons and four Super Bowl victories with the San Francisco 49ers.

He didn't have a choice, unlike Brady, who signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in free agency.

"I had a different story, where they had made a decision. He, obviously, they never would have gotten rid of. I still don't understand how New England let him get away. I don't understand that," Montana said.

The New England Patriots have released Stephen Gostkowski. 

Gostkowski won three Super Bowls with the Patriots.

Gostkowski was placed on injured reserve in October with a left hip injury.

While Tom Brady had interest in signing with the Indianapolis Colts, they wanted to go in another direction in Philip Rivers on a shorter deal.

Brady also signaled to the San Francisco 49ers during the process that they were his preferred franchise, but they decided to retain Jimmy Garoppolo. 

Brady ultimately signed a two-year deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The New England Patriots have signed Brian Hoyer to a one-year contract worth $1.05 million.

The Indianapolis Colts released Hoyer on Saturday.

Hoyer returns for his third stint with the Patriots, joining 2019 fourth-round draft pick Jarrett Stidham and five-year veteran Cody Kessler as the three quarterbacks on the roster.

Tom Brady made it clear through various channels that he would sign with the San Francisco 49ers if given the opportunity.

Brady grew up a fan of the 49ers and they are coming off a Super Bowl appearance. 

The 49ers discussed the possibility internally, but they ultimately decided to remain committed to Jimmy Garoppolo. 

Brady's other options appeared to be the Tennessee Titans and re-signing with the New England Patriots until the Tampa Bay Buccaneers emerged. 

Tom Brady met with Bill Belichick late in 2017 and wanted clarity on his future with the New England Patriots. Brady wanted to sign a deal that ensured he would retire with the Patriots.

The meeting between Brady and Belichick ended with a "blowup," according to a source.

Brady met with Robert Kraft and received mixed signals.

Tom Brady officially signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Friday morning.

According to a report, the quarterback was given a two-year, $60 million deal.

Joe Thuney has singed his franchise-tag tender with the New England Patriots.

The tag is worth $14.7 million for the 2020 season, a large number for a guard.

Between Thuney and fellow guard Shaq Mason, the Patriots have approximately $25 million committed to the position.

Tom Brady has agreed to sign with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on a contract worth $30 million per season.

Brady announced on Tuesday morning that he would leave the New England Patriots.

"Although my football journey will take place elsewhere, I appreciate everything that we have achieved and am grateful for our incredible TEAM accomplishments," he wrote.

Brady's signing will officially end Jameis Winston's reign as Tampa Bay's starting quarterback.

The Carolina Panthers and New England Patriots have interest in signing Teddy Bridgewater.

Bridgewater spent the past two seasons as backup quarterback of the New Orleans Saints.

The Panthers are trying to trade Cam Newton, while Tom Brady has decided not to re-sign with the Patriots.

Bridgewater was 5-0 this past season with the Saints with a passer rating of 99.1.
