The New England Patriots are moving forward with plans to promote defensive line coach DeMarcus Covington to defensive coordinator, a source confirmed to ESPN on Saturday.

The Patriots have informed other candidates that Covington is the choice, a source relayed to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.

Ohio State will hire Bill O'Brien as offensive coordinator.

O'Brien served as offensive coordinator of the New England Patriots last season.

O'Brien was previously head coach of the Houston Texans and Penn State.

The New England Patriots are giving Steve and Brian Belichick, the sons of former head coach Bill Belichick, the chance to remain with the team, sources have confirmed.

The future landing spots for the two coaches could also be tied to whether their father lands another head-coaching job in 2024.

Steve Belichick spent the past 12 seasons on the Patriots' staff, elevating from an entry-level coaching assistant to linebackers coach and defensive playcaller. Brian Belichick began his career with the franchise in 2016 as a scouting assistant before working his way up from entry-level coaching assistant (2017-19) to safeties coach (2020-23).

The Atlanta Falcons have officially expressed interest in the coach who handed the franchise the most painful loss in team history.

The Falcons announced Monday they have interviewed former New England coach Bill Belichick for their head-coaching vacancy, the first known interview done by Belichick since he and the Patriots mutually parted ways last week.

The New England Patriots will hire Jerod Mayo as head coach, according to sources.

The news comes less than 24 hours after Bill Belichick and Robert Kraft held a joint press conference to announce the legendary coach's departure from the franchise.

Mayo, 37, will be formally introduced at a news conference next week.

A linebacker for the Patriots from 2008 to 2015 after being selected in the first round of the draft out of Tennessee, Mayo joined Belichick's coaching staff in 2019.

Belichick and Patriots owner Robert Kraft spent this week periodically meeting and discussing how each side wanted to proceed. Ultimately, the talks resulted in a mutual decision that left both sides comfortable and at ease.

Belichick, who had one year remaining on his contract, will be allowed to leave the team without the Patriots seeking compensation. 

The New England Patriots could bring Josh McDaniels back if Bill Belichick remains as head coach, according to a report.

McDaniels was fired by the Las Vegas Raiders after a 3-5 start in his second season as head coach.

The 47-year-old was an assistant for the Patriots from 2001-2008. He was named head coach of the Denver Broncos before the 2009 season, but lasted less than two years.

After one season with the Los Angeles Rams, McDaniels returned to New England as offensive coordinator and stayed on until taking the Raiders job.

Bill Belichick spoke to the media on Monday morning as his future with the New England Patriots remains uncertain.

"I'm under contract. I'm going to do what I always do," Belichick said. "As far as any decisions or direction for next year, way too early for that."

Belichick said he'd meet with Robert Kraft, but didn't provide a timeline.

When asked about the possibility that he could remain head coach but give up his control of the team's personnel, Belichick sounded open to it.

"I'm for whatever we collectively decide as an organization is the best thing to help our football team," he said. "I'm here to work to help our team every day. That's what I'm going to do."

Although many around the league expect that a change will come in New England, the sides apparently have not yet talked about a split at any point this season, sources told ESPN.

Belichick's future in New England is one of several unresolved coaching situations that teams face as they enter the final week of the regular season.

If the New England Patriots lose to the New York Jets this weekend, Bill Belichick will tie the NFL record for most losses ever by a head coach. 

Both Dan Reeves and Jeff Fisher currently hold the mark with 165 loses.

The Patriots are 4-12. Belichick has never suffered a 13-loss season in his 23 years with New England.
