Bears Told Andy Dalton Starting Quarterback Job Is His

Mar 19, 2021 8:35 AM

Andy Dalton says the Chicago Bears have assured him that the team's starting quarterback job is his.

Dalton agreed to a one-year, $10 million deal earlier this week. Chicago still has Nick Foles under contract, while Mitchell Trubisky signed with the Buffalo Bills in free agency.

"They told me I was the starter," Dalton said. "That was one of the reasons why I wanted to come here. So every conversation I've had has been that, so that's the assurance that I've gotten."

Dalton has thrown for 33,764 yards, 218 touchdowns and 126 interceptions over nine seasons with Cincinnati and one with Dallas.

Seahawks Rebuffed 'Very Aggressive Pursuit' Of Russell Wilson By Bears

Mar 16, 2021 8:56 PM

The Chicago Bears engaged in a "very aggressive pursuit" of a trade for Russell Wilson, but were told by the Seattle Seahawks no trade would be considered at this time.

The Bears were on Wilson's list of four teams along with the Dallas Cowboys, New Orleans Saints and Las Vegas Raiders. The Cowboys re-signed Dak Prescott last week, while the Saints have retained Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill. The Saints also have salary-cap issues that would make it difficult to absorb Wilson's $19 million base salary for 2021.

The Bears pivoted instead to signing Andy Dalton to a one-year deal.

Nick Foles Still Candidate To Be Bears' Starting QB

Mar 1, 2021 8:36 AM

The Chicago Bears would love to add a star quarterback this offseason, but if they are unable to accomplish that Nick Foles remains a fallback option.

Foles is under contract at an affordable salary cap number of $6.7 million in 2021. Foles' dead cap number would be higher than that, so there's no salary cap incentive for the Bears to get rid of him.

Ryan Pace has made positive comments about Foles this offseason.

"I respect the way he handled a lot of adversity this year, not just for himself in the quarterback room," Pace said. "He was a leader in the room as a starter or as a backup. And . . . when he was playing, there were some things that, in fairness to him, the offensive line was a little unsettled and the run game wasn't quite where we wanted it to be."
