Bears Clinch NFC North Title

Jul 8, 2014 7:20 AM

It took another workhorse-performance from running back Thomas Jones to propel the Chicago Bears to a 24-17 victory over the Green Bay Packers and a NFC North title on Sunday night. Jones finished with 105 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries, continuing his solid, consistent play he has displayed all season. "We want to win the Super Bowl,'' defensive end Alex Brown said. "Everything else is second, and nobody wants to be second. We're not shy about our goals.''

Six Bears Head To Hawaii

Sep 4, 2014 5:00 AM

Middle linebacker Brian Urlacher will lead a brigade of six Bears to the Pro Bowl, the team's largest contingent since sending six players following the 1990 season. Five of the Pro Bowlers play on the Bears' No. 1-ranked defense. While Urlacher will make his fifth trip in six NFL seasons, safety Mike Brown, cornerback Nathan Vasher, linebacker Lance Briggs and defensive tackle Tommie Harris are being honored for the first time. Brian Urlacher will make his fifth trip to the Pro Bowl in six NFL seasons. The Bears offense will be represented by center Olin Kreutz, a Hawaii native who will be making his fifth straight Pro Bowl appearance in his home state. The five defensive players are the most the Bears have sent to the Pro Bowl since the 1985 Super Bowl season when Richard Dent, Dan Hampton, Mike Singletary, Otis Wilson and Dave Duerson were honored. Bouncing back from an injured-plagued 2004 campaign, Urlacher is a candidate for NFL Defensive Player of the Year after recording 161 tackles, six sacks, nine tackles for loss, six pass breakups and one forced fumble in 14 games this season.

Grossman Named Chicago's Starter

Jul 8, 2014 4:09 PM

Rex Grossman is back as starting quarterback of the Chicago Bears. And what a long road it has been. After countless hours of rehabilitation to overcome two major injuries, he was more appreciative than ever Monday of where he's been, and of where he wants to go. "It was tough to look through the window and see my teammates practicing when I'm in there doing something that is extremely boring," Grossman said shortly after Bears coach Lovie Smith announced he would start Sunday against Green Bay. "And now getting a chance to play, it's one of those things that is extremely gratifying. It's an opportunity I'm definitely going to take advantage of because of what I've been through. ... I've got a little bit more respect for the position I'm in." Grossman, who replaced struggling rookie Kyle Orton in the second half Sunday night and led the Bears to a 16-3 win over the Atlanta Falcons, gave the Bears' passing offense an instant charge and a spark it had been missing

Grossman Returns To Action

Oct 15, 2014 6:26 PM

Rex Grossman returned to the field for the Chicago Bears on Sunday night against Atlanta, playing in his first regular-season game since tearing a knee ligament on Sept. 26, 2004. Grossman, who spent long hours of rehab to return as Chicago's starter before breaking his ankle Aug. 12 in a preseason game, replaced struggling Kyle Orton in the third quarter. On his first play of the season after the long layoff, Grossman completed a 22-yard pass to Muhsin Muhammad. Orton, who was the starter during Chicago's eight-game winning streak this season, completed 2-of-10 first-half passes for 12 yards before he was yanked on a frigid night at Soldier Field. When Grossman ran onto the field to start the Bears' first series of the third quarter, he was greeted by a loud roar. Grossman moved up to the No. 2 spot last week.

Bears Linemen Fined $50k Each For Fight

Oct 15, 2014 6:26 PM

Chicago Bears offensive linemen Olin Kreutz and Fred Miller were fined $50,000 each Friday for a fight that violated the NFL's personal conduct policy. The players were involved in the fight last month at the FBI shooting range in the Chicago area, prompting an internal investigation by the bureau. NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue fined Kreutz and Miller because the league's special conduct policy addresses off-field matters. It specifically prohibits conduct that endangers NFL employees and casts a negative light on the league and its players. Kreutz broke Miller's jaw during the altercation. Miller, who needed surgery, originally claimed he was hurt in a fall at home. Bears coach Lovie Smith was unaware of the fight until days after it occurred. Kreutz said he would appeal. "I'm going to fight it obviously," he said Friday after the Bears' practice in Lake Forest, Ill. "I don't want to pay that fine. I don't think it's an appropriate fine, but that's what it came back at. I don't know how much I can do about it, but I'm going to fight it."
