Josh McCown Will Consider Retirement In Offseason

Dec 6, 2014 10:06 PM

Josh McCown has had a highly productive season filling in for Jay Cutler as starting quarterback of the Chicago Bears, but he isn't sure if he is will continue his football career beyond the current season.

McCown will be a free agent and figures to draw a lot of interest, including from the Bears.

“It’s a year-to-year thing of how long is this going to be,” McCown said. “In our minds, when we commit to it, it’s for a year. So to be apart like this, it’s a tough deal. But it’s something everybody [in my family] talks about, including my daughter, my oldest, especially, just sitting with her, ‘Is all this OK? Are you cool with this?’ So she’s been great with it all.

“But for me, I know that there is a time coming where it’s going to get harder and harder. I kind of have a thought process in my mind of: I don’t know if I want to do this and let her get out of my house having done this the last four years where we live apart.

“There’s not enough money in the world to justify and make it feel OK to miss those games and stuff like that. It’s a process. It’s things that we think about, quite honestly, moving forward in my career in the direction, ‘Are we going to keep playing?’ All those things, because it’s a real question, because those things are hard.”

Bears May Still Tag Jay Cutler

Jul 9, 2014 11:50 AM

The Chicago Bears may still use their franchise tag on Jay Cutler.

General manager Phil Emery earlier said that the tag would not be the ideal way to keep Cutler.

"I didn't say that I would rule it out," Emery said Friday on WMVP-AM's "Waddle and Silvy Show," per ESPN.com. "I said it's not the first thing we would think about in signing players that we like. If you put a franchise tag on a player, that's a player that you like. We like Jay. If you like a player, you want to move forward in a multi-contract year basis, not a short term."

The franchise tag for quarterbacks in 2014 is expected to be approximately $16.2 million, which is nearly double his 2013 salary of $8.97 million.

Bears Insist Jay Cutler Will Start Instead Of Josh McCown When Healthy

Jun 19, 2014 10:33 AM

Marc Trestman insisted that Jay Cutler will return as the starting quarterback of the Chicago Bears instead of Josh McCown as soon as he is healthy enough to play.

Cutler has missed the last four games with a severe high ankle sprain.

McCown has an NFL-leading 85.7 QBR.

"There's no change in the plan," Trestman said. "We'll see where Jay is this week. He'll have to be released by the doctors. When Jay is ready to play, he'll be playing."
