After a roller-coaster offseason that included a surprising trade request, a social media scrubbing and a half-dozen other receivers signing lucrative contracts, the final domino fell Sunday when wideout Deebo Samuel agreed to a three-year contract extension with the San Francisco 49ers.
The deal is worth a maximum value of $73.5 million over the three years and includes $58.1 million in guarantees, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.
The San Francisco 49ers have released Dee Ford after three injury-plagued seasons.
Since Wednesday's move comes after June 1, San Francisco will spread out the bulk of the more than $11.5 million left on his deal over the next two years. The move saves $1.12 million against the 2022 salary cap.
The 49ers originally acquired Ford in a 2019 trade with the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for a second-round draft pick. They promptly signed Ford to a five-year, $85 million deal.
Jimmy Garoppolo passed his physical with the San Francisco 49ers Tuesday and thus won't be placed on the active/physically unable to perform list, according to a report.
That voids Garoppolo's $7.5 million injury guarantee, leaving no guaranteed money on his contract unless he's on the 49ers' roster Week 1.
Garoppolo underwent surgery on his right shoulder on March 8 and only recently started throwing again.
The San Francisco 49ers have publicly declared Trey Lance their starting quarterback in 2022 despite their continued inability to trade Jimmy Garoppolo.
"We had an awesome run with Jimmy, it was great," Shanahan said, via 49ers Web Zone. "But when you bring in a salary cap and things like that, there are so many tough decisions that you have to make and we made [that decision] a year ago. And we got to here and I was so happy [with] how Jimmy played last year, that he took us almost to the Super Bowl, got healthy, [and] guys around him played real well around him. But this is something that we did last year knowing where we wanted to go with this franchise and how you balance out a salary cap, how you balance out a roster, and Jimmy gave Trey a year that I thought he needed just to get used to this league, get his feet wet a little bit."
Shanahan reiterated the team's outlook at the quarterback position during Tuesday's press conference, telling reporters, "We have moved on to Trey."
There is no more clarity in the Deebo Samuel situation as the season inches closer.
The San Francisco 49ers will begin training camp next week and no Samuel extension, or trade, is imminent.
According to a report, it remains to be seen if the wide receiver will report next week.
The San Francisco 49ers have officially given Jimmy Garoppolo's agents permission to seek a trade involving the quarterback, according to sources.
Garoppolo, who is recovering from offseason surgery on his throwing shoulder, has been cleared to start practicing. The 49ers will open training camp next week.
Kyle Shanahan acknowledged in May that Garoppolo was "most likely to be traded" but then noted that a trade was "not a guarantee."
Jimmy Garoppolo is expected to be fully cleared by mid-August.
Garoppolo met recently with Dr. Neal ElAttrache, who performed Garappolo's surgery, and his shoulder is progressing well.
The quarterback was injured during the San Francisco 49ers' NFC Divisional Round win over the Dallas Cowboys.
It was reported last week that Garoppolo was still expected to be traded by the end of July.
Fred Warner believes Trey Lance is ready to lead the San Francisco 49ers as the quarterback prepares for his second professional season.
"I continue to say, man, how much I've admired the way Trey has taken on just all the criticism, all I guess you could say all the pressure people are trying to put on him," Warner said the The Rich Eisen Show. "He's been super professional about it, especially with how young he is. (He's) very mature for his age.
"And so, just the things that you see from him and the small things that everybody else outside of the building sees from him, that should give you a good sense of like the maturity for such a young player, and if given the reins, the way that he would handle it. I can continue to sit here and tell you how great of a person and player that he is. I've already spoken on that. But whatever it may be, I know that he is, for sure, if given the reins, that he's ready for it. He's very professional and mature and ready for whatever he is given."
The Seattle Seahawks have held internal discussions about the possibility of adding Jimmy Garoppolo, according to a report.
Garoppolo's future with the San Francisco 49ers remains unclear as he continues to rehab his shoulder.
With training camp gearing up in the coming weeks, the trade market for Jimmy Garoppolo is likely to heat up.
The quarterback's agent, Don Yee, says his shoulder rehabilitation is going well.
"He's progressing well and on schedule," Yee said. "We're optimistic about the upcoming season. Over the weekend, a report came out that asserted that I had spoken to a media member about his future, but the report was false."
The report being referenced suggested the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a trade destination for Garoppolo.
