The San Francisco 49ers will be without Elijah Mitchell for 6-8 weeks because of a knee injury.

Mitchell left Sunday's win over the New Orleans Saints with the injury. The Niners originally thought the running back had an MCL sprain that would sideline him for just 2-4 weeks.

"It wasn't the news we were looking for," Kyle Shanahan said.

Mitchell, who set a franchise rookie record with 963 yards rushing last season, only returned from an injured reserve stint on Nov. 12. He injured his knee in the season opener and missed seven games.

"He's pretty disappointed," Shanahan said. "Everyone knows how good Elijah's been, how hard he's worked to get back from his last one and how good he's been playing since he came back. To be right back there, I know he was real down on it. He's had some real bad luck. He got rolled up on and it was a bad position for him to be in."

San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan understood why linebacker Dre Greenlaw drew a penalty for unnecessary roughness after a helmet-to-helmet hit on Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert late in the first half of Sunday night's game.

But even after his team emerged with a 22-16 victory to improve to 5-4, Shanahan said he didn't think Greenlaw should have been ejected and was still befuddled as to why that decision was made.

"It kind of actually blew my mind," Shanahan said. 

Odell Beckham Jr. would like to whittle down his current list of potential teams -- which includes the Dallas Cowboys, Buffalo Bills, Kansas City Chiefs, New York Giants and San Francisco 49ers -- as soon as possible and have a decision by the end of this month, league sources told ESPN.

Jason Verrett tore his Achilles during practice on Wednesday just as he was set to return from a torn ACL.

Verrett tore his ACL on Sept. 12, 2021.

"It took the life out of everybody at practice," Samuel said. "Kyle [Shanahan] tried to bring it up but he couldn't really talk and so he was just like 'What you guys want to do?' And at the end of the day, it's a part of this job and that would be the last guy I want to see on this team like go down knowing all the things that he's been through. So, we huddled up as a team and everybody prayed for him and we tried our best to finish practice."

The Miami Dolphins have acquired Jeff Wilson from the San Francisco 49ers for a 2023 fifth round pick.

Wilson became expendable for the 49ers after their trade for Christian McCaffery.
