While the San Francisco 49ers do not appear to be close to trading or cutting Jimmy Garoppolo, they expect Trey Lance to eventually start.

"That's why we looked into trading Jimmy, because we obviously believe that Trey can be a starter and we're ready to do that," Kyle Shanahan said. "But if we can't upgrade our team in another way, we're not just going to get rid of a good quarterback because we have other quarterbacks on the roster. Quarterbacks are really hard to come by. Some teams don't have any at all, and the fact that we have three that we're happy with, that is a good thing.

"We brought Trey here to be that eventually, and I think that will be sooner than later, but when Jimmy gets his surgery and we can't upgrade our team by getting some good picks until people feel good about that [surgery], I'm all right with that. We're not just getting rid of him to get rid of him. Jimmy is a good player that we all really like as a person and as a teammate, and we're going to wait to see whatever helps the Niners the most."

There is a question of whether the presence of Garoppolo could stunt the development of Lance. 

"You've got to make sure that you're not hindering his development," Shanahan said. "Trey's working his tail off. He knows how I feel about him. He knows what our expectations are for him. And I think he's got a lot of respect for Jimmy. But the situation is clear. We were trying to make a move to add some draft picks ... and we were pretty close to it. And then Jimmy ended up getting the surgery, which changes things.

"I think Trey will understand all that. I haven't had to talk to him about it. But I think it makes sense for all these guys. Trey's not an insecure guy. I think the situation makes sense. There's nothing sneaky going on about it. And he's confident. He's going to come in and focus on playing football. And focus on beating out whoever he has to, whether it's [Garoppolo], whether it's Nate [Sudfeld]. He's going to come in and be the best he can be."

While the San Francisco 49ers have yet to trade Jimmy Garoppolo, the team doesn't envision a scenario where he is cut.

"I don't foresee that," John Lynch said. "He's too good a player. I think Jimmy will be playing for us or will be playing for someone else. He's too good of a player not to be."

According to Lynch, the biggest reason Garoppolo has yet to be traded is simple: The Niners have not received a formal offer. 

While other quarterbacks began to move in trades and signings around the league, Lynch said Garoppolo's right shoulder surgery is what caused interested teams to put pursuit of him on hold.

"I think, ultimately, the teams that we were closest with, the surgery gave them pause and they ended up going in other directions," Lynch said.

The San Francisco 49ers are telling teams they have an offer on the table for Jimmy Garoppolo of two second round picks.

The 49ers acquired Garoppolo from the New England Patriots in 2017 for one second round pick.

The potential destinations for Garoppolo include the Indianapolis Colts, New Orleans Saints, Houston Texans and potentially the Carolina Panthers.

The San Francisco 49ers will sign Charvarius Ward to a three-year deal worth up to $42 million.

The former Kansas City Chiefs cornerback will get $26.7 million in guaranteed money.

Ward, who turns 26 on May 16, has been a regular in the Chiefs' starting lineup since late in the 2018 season.

The Indianapolis Colts are on the hunt for a new quarterback after trading Carson Wentz to the Washington Commanders.

According to a report, the Colts are expected to be in the mix for Jimmy Garoppolo.

The San Francisco 49ers are widely expected to move on from Garoppolo this offseason after trading up last April to draft Trey Lance.

Garoppolo recently underwent successful surgery on his throwing shoulder, which will sideline him for a chunk of the offseason.

The San Francisco 49ers have hired Brian Griese as their next quarterbacks coach, according to sources.

Griese had served as one of the color analysts on ESPN's Monday Night Football since 2020.

Griese replaces Rich Scangarello, who left the team to become the offensive coordinator at Kentucky last month.
