49ers Want To Become 'Destination' For 2018 Free Agents

Feb 12, 2018 5:32 PM

The San Francisco 49ers hope that signing Jimmy Garoppolo to a huge five-year deal last week will make them a preferred destination for free agents.

"It's 75 degrees and sunny outside, we've got this guy [Garoppolo], who wouldn't want to be here?" John Lynch said. "We want to become that. We want to become a destination where everyone wants to be. We've got a long way to go. We were 6-10, okay, so this is a big day for us, but we have a long way to go, and we're fully aware of that."

The 49ers entered the offseason with the second-most cap space in the NFL with a projected $77.4 million to spend.

"We're going to be aggressively prudent and always make wise decisions and look out some years and do things, though, that we feel are a fit and give us an opportunity to be a better organization," Lynch added. "We're going to make those moves. This takes up some of that room, but that was a trade-off we were happy to make, and we still have a lot left."

49ers Needed Only 10 Minutes To Accept Patriots' Garoppolo Proposal

Feb 11, 2018 10:53 AM

Kyle Shanahan initially inquired about the availability of Jimmy Garoppolo in February of 2017.

“At that time, the only guys we thought were franchise quarterbacks that were being mentioned were Kirk and Jimmy,” Shanahan said. “And I knew Kirk wasn’t going to be a possibility. And I remember asking Bill [Belichick] personally down at the combine about Jimmy, and very quickly he told me that wasn’t a possibility. So we moved on from that. He told me he wasn’t going to trade him.”

Shanahan was shocked when the Patriots approached the 49ers in October if they had interest in trading for Garoppolo.

“We were 0–8. We’d just gotten our asses kicked by Philly," said Shanahan. "I came in on a Monday and that was the last thing I was thinking about. And that ended up popping up. It’s different, because it’s a big deal, we want those draft picks. We know have a ways to go, we want to build this organization the right way. And what worried me was having to decide long-term on a guy in just a few games.”

Shanahan and John Lynch only needed 10 minutes to accept New England's proposal of a second round pick for Garoppolo.

The 49ers signed Garoppolo to a five-year, $137.5 million contract this offseason.

“Everyone wants to talk the numbers. Man, that’s what quarterbacks cost. I don’t even think about the numbers,” Shanahan said. “I look at everything as, ‘Is this a top guy? Is this a guy that has a chance to be one of the better guys in the league?’ And once you believe that, you do whatever it takes to keep him. And that’s what it takes to keep him.”

49ers' 2018 Cap Space Drops To $63M After Jimmy Garoppolo Extension

Feb 9, 2018 5:57 PM

The San Francisco 49ers project to have approximately $63 million in cap space this offseason after signing Jimmy Garoppolo to a contract extension.

Garoppolo's deal is front-loaded with a $28 million roster bonus paid out this season instead of a signing bonus that would pro-rate over the life of the contract.

Garoppolo's deal projects having a $37 million cap hit in 2018 with it dropping to a $20 million cap hit in 2019.

The 49ers were previously projected to have the most cap space in the NFL entering the offseason but they now have either the third or fourth most cap space.

Jimmy Garoppolo, 49ers Agree Upon Five-Year, $137.5M Extension

Feb 9, 2018 10:24 AM

The San Francisco 49ers and Jimmy Garoppolo have agreed upon a five-year, $137.5 million contract extension.

The deal is the biggest in NFL history on an average per year basis.

The 49ers traded a second round pick to the New England Patriots for Garoppolo at the deadline in October.

Garoppolo went 5-0 as the 49ers' starter with a QBR of 78.2 and 96.2 passer rating. Garoppolo threw seven touchdowns against five interceptions.

Garoppolo, like Tom Brady, is represented by Don Yee.

The 49ers signed Colin Kaepernick to a six-year, $126 million deal in 2014.

Jimmy Garoppolo, 49ers Make Progress On Extension

Feb 4, 2018 3:47 PM

Jimmy Garoppolo and the San Francisco 49ers have made progress on extension talks, according to sources.

The 49ers traded for Garoppolo right before the trade deadline.

In Mobile, Alabama, for the Senior Bowl, general manager John Lynch sounded like talks on Garoppolo's long-term future with the team were heading in the right direction.

"When you find the right guy at that position, it's really good for your franchise," Lynch said. "We believe we've found the right guy. Now the challenge is getting Jimmy signed. We're working hard towards that. We'll see. I think he wants to be with us and we want him there. I think it makes too much sense not to happen. So it's just a matter of getting it done."
