Chris Johnson To Hold Out
Titans running back Chris Johnson is planning to hold out of training camp while seeking a more lucrative contract, according to a league source.
Veteran holdouts will be fined $30,000 for each day of camp they miss under the new labor agreement.
Johnson is heading into his fourth season and due to make just $800,000 in base salary.
Finnegan Openly Questions Hasselbeck's Fit With Titans
The Titans agreed to terms with veteran quarterback Matt Hasselbeck on Wednesday.
Soon after, Tennessee cornerback Cortland Finnegan openly questioned Hasselbeck's fit with the team.
"He throws the ball with good check downs, good intermediate passing game," Finnegan told 104.5 the Zone.
"That's a West Coast offense they run, he throws the ball quick. I don't fear his deep ball. Don't get me wrong, he's great at what he's done. Pro Bowls, All Pros, even playing in the Super Bowl, but for what we have going, what direction I want to go and the team wants to go, I don't know if he fits what we need, but I'm not the G.M., I'm not the front office."
Titans Will Release Young Thursday
The Titans will officially release quarterback Vince Young on Thursday, the first day players can be placed on waivers for the new league year.
Tennessee had hoped to find a taker for Young in the abbreviated trade market after the lockout, but they have found no teams willing to offer them anything in return, according to sources.
Titans Reach Deal With Hasselbeck
The Titans have reached an agreement with quarterback Matt Hasselbeck on a multiyear contract, according to a league source.
News broke Tuesday that Hasselbeck wouldn't re-sign with the Seahawks.
Moss May Not Draw Much Interest
Randy Moss may not find much interest in his services on the free agent market, no matter how good of shape he is in.
According to coaches and front office men, there are a few reasons why teams will pass him over.
"He can only run – a go, corner and a post now," one personnel director said of the 34-year-old. "Maybe a hitch."
An offensive coordinator explained his lack of interest in Moss by saying he worries that speed-reliant receivers like Moss decline more rapidly than bigger, stronger receivers with an all around game.
Fisher Eyes Coaching In 2012
Jeff Fisher, who was the coach of the Titans/Oilers for 17 years, will enjoy a season off before pursuing another job next year.
"I'm enjoying my time (off but) certainly not done with what I set out to do, and that was to win a championship. So looking forward to another opportunity to try to do so," he said.
"I may entertain something (another head job) next year."
He added that he harbored no ill feelings toward the Titans after he and the team mutually parted in January after a 6-10 season.
"I was very pleased with the way we sorted things out, worked things out. Very, very appreciative for the organization, for Mr. Adams to give me an opportunity for that many years," he said.
"But sometimes in life you just need to take a deep breath, and I needed that. It just became apparent it was time that I just needed some time away to get rest and recharged."
Fisher: Young Will Learn From Mistakes
Former Titans head coach Jeff Fisher is confident that quarterback Vince Young will learn from the mistakes he has made.
"Keep in mind, he won a lot of games for our organization and led us to the playoffs," Fisher said.
"He's a tremendous player.
"He's certainly got a great deal of ability, and he's a rare athlete, and he's a good teammate. And hopefully he can learn from this experience and get that (next) opportunity."
Young is still under contract with the Titans, but owner Bud Adams has said he'll be released as soon as the lockout ends.
"A lot of the really good quarterbacks had a defining moment, you know where it just got hard on 'em -- it just gets hard -- and I think that's what happened with Vince," said Fisher.
"I think he had a defining moment, and it just became overwhelming to him. And I know he's had a chance to step away from it now, and I know he's one that learns from mistakes. If given the opportunity, he'll learn from this past one."
Munchak Believes Collins Was Undervalued
First-year Titans head coach Mike Munchak doesn't believe Kerry Collins received the respect he deserved during his playing days.
Munchak won't get the chance to coach the quarterback, who opted to retire recently rather than return for yet another NFL season.
Collins spent 16 seasons in the NFL.
"(Collins) was great to have around, not just for young quarterbacks, but for all of us on the offensive side," Munchak said. "People never realized the value of someone like him on your roster."
As Tennessee's offensive line coach for 14 seasons before being promoted to head coach, Munchak closely worked with Collins, who was a valuable asset for the coaching staff.
"We ended up having a great working relationship when he came here," Munchak said. "Line coaches work hand in hand with quarterbacks. I learned a lot from him from the standpoint of what quarterbacks look at, and that helped me with protections and things we worked on through the week."
Randy Moss Has 'Chip On His Shoulder'
Randy Moss is looking forward to entering the NFL free-agent market whenever it opens, according to agent Joel Segal.
Moss went from the Patriots last season to the Vikings, then the Titans, but he starred in New England in the three previous years and has been working out relentlessly, according to Segal, who said his client is in "freakish shape."
"Randy has been working out, two-a-days, all spring and summer in West Virginia," Segal said.
"He is determined, motivated and quite frankly has a huge chip on his shoulder. Whatever team ends up getting Randy, they're going to know they're getting the old Randy Moss. He's not just coming in to be on the team, he's going to be Randy Moss -- a difference maker."
