April 2019 - San Francisco 49ers Wiretap
The San Francisco 49ers had two disappointing seasons after hiring Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch to run the franchise. The 49ers have quickly turned things around in 2019 and currently have the best record in the NFC.
“That’s why I’m happy where I’m at—it’s the organization we have,” he said. “We went through some tough times in our first two years, especially starting 0-9. I think the next year was 1-7. When you start that way, it’s very hard for a place not to splinter. That’s what was so different here in our first two years. Going 0-9 and finishing 6-10 helped finish with some momentum. Last year, never once throughout the year did you ever feel like the defense was against the offense or vice versa. Never once did I have an owner crushing me with, ‘Hey, we gotta change this guy.’ I mean, everyone here really just believed in each other. That was really tested with some of the times we went through but I think that was the neatest thing about it. We knew we had the right people around. We just had to get a couple difference-makers and stay healthy.”
The San Francisco 49ers are 9-1, but will certainly be tested over the next three weeks.
San Francisco's next three games are against the Green Bay Packers, Baltimore Ravens and New Orleans Saints. All three of those teams are currently 8-2.
No team in the Super Bowl era has had three consecutive games against teams that have won at least 80 percent of their games this late in the season.
The NFL has moved the Week 12 game between the Green Bay Packers and San Francisco 49ers to Sunday Night Football, replacing the matchup between the Seattle Seahawks and Philadelphia Eagles.
The game between the 8-2 Packers and 8-1 49ers was due to be played at 4:25 p.m. ET, at the same time the Cowboys and the Patriots play at Gillette Stadium.
Richard Sherman is supporting a substantial increase to the NFL's minimum salary as part of the ongoing negotiations on a new collective bargaining agreement.
“I think the most important thing for our players, honestly, and it’s things that I think some of our players lose perspective on while you’re playing, is long-term health," said Sherman. "And, being able to afford and to get that long-term health once you’re done. … You want to do things that affect the majority of the group. You know, you can’t necessarily worry about the top guys, you know, because you’re like, ‘Man, how come you fix the top guys’ contracts and get them more,’ because those guys are making a ton of money. We’re talking about 60% of our players are on minimum contracts and how can we make sure those guys can see every dime and more of it. Instead of $400,000, why can’t we make it $800,000 as the minimum so that it affects more guys?”
The minimum salary for rookies in 2019 is $495,000.
The San Francisco 49ers have lost Kwon Alexander for the remainder of the season with a torn pectoral.
Alexander suffered the injury late in Thursday's win and was declared out for the rest of the game soon after getting to the sideline.
"Kwon's been great for us this year on the field and as a leader," Kyle Shanahan said Friday morning. "I'm a lot more nervous about the MRI coming back today.
"He's been a great addition for us. It's going to be a tough loss. Hopefully it's not for the whole season, but if it is, we'll deal with it. I'm really hoping it's not."
