Tevin Coleman Looks Like Clear No. 1 In San Francisco's Backfield

May 28, 2019 11:07 AM

It's early, but Tevin Coleman is looking like the clear No. 1 in the crowded backfield of the San Francisco 49ers.

The 49ers added Coleman to a backfield that already included Matt Breida, last year's leading rusher, and Jerick McKinnon, who missed all of 2018 due to injury.

Coleman has gotten a majority of first-team snaps in OTAs.

Jimmy Garoppolo Making Progress In Return From ACL

May 22, 2019 11:57 AM

Jimmy Garoppolo participated in individual and 7-on-7 drills with the San Francisco 49ers on Tuesday, but skipped team drills. Garoppolo suffered a torn ACL on Sept. 23.

Garoppolo will not be cleared for full team work until training camp in part because the team doesn't want to risk having defenders around Garoppolo's legs during offseason work.

"I think he's handling it as well as he can," Kyle Shanahan said. "He's getting used to it. It's just a long process when you recover from an ACL, and he gets as much work as he can get in. I know he'd love to be out there for every rep, but he knows that he can't, so he's trying to make the most of his 7-on-7 and do as much work in every other aspect as he can."

The two sides remain far apart, but the San Francisco 49ers have conducted talks with DeForest Buckner about a long-term deal.

The 49ers exercised the fifth-year option for the 2020 season on the defensive tackle a few weeks ago.

Buckner was the seventh overall pick in 2016.
