Jimmy Garoppolo Purposely Throws Into Coverage During Preseason

Aug 29, 2019 8:26 AM

Jimmy Garoppolo has had an up and down preseason, but claims part of that is by design.

The San Francisco 49ers quarterback says he likes to try things like throwing into coverage during the preseason to see how his receivers fight for the ball.

"A big part of that is it still being preseason, or in practice, you try things like that," Garoppolo said. "You know, during a real game, you wouldn't make that throw or that decision, but there's a trust factor between quarterback and ... whoever's catching the ball. The more you try those things, you see who's going to make the play for you in a crucial situation."

Jerick McKinnon Has Setback In ACL Rehab

Aug 29, 2019 7:44 AM

Jerick McKinnon has encountered a setback in his return from a torn ACL.

His status for the start of the season with the San Francisco 49ers is up in the air.

McKinnon returned to practice Tuesday afternoon but the session apparently didn't go that well for him and his surgically repaired right knee.

"Yesterday we brought him out and it's a real bummer because he keeps getting to the final step," John Lynch said. "And the final step is actually playing NFL football, particularly at his position where you have got to make hard cuts. You've got to put your foot in the ground. And we did it a month ago. And we got to that step and he kind of regressed and I would say yesterday we had a similar situation. So we're trying to get to 'OK, what's really the root cause of the problems that he's having?'

"Yesterday was not encouraging from that standpoint for Jet. What that means, we're not sure yet. We're working hard to find that out."

Jimmy Garoppolo Posts 0.0 QB Rating In Return

Aug 20, 2019 8:09 AM

Jimmy Garoppolo went 1-for-6 for zero yards and an interception on Monday night in his first game since suffering a season-ending knee injury last September.

The San Francisco 49ers quarterback finished the night with a 0.0 passer rating.

"Obviously [I'm] a little frustrated," Garoppolo said.. "But it's the NFL, unfortunately we don't get to play the whole game. ... You wish you could be out there for more so you could bounce back. ... It is what it is. It's the preseason right now, so you just gotta take it in stride."

The 49ers signed Garoppolo to a five-year, $137 million contract last year. After a promising start to this season, he product tore his ACL in a Week 3 game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Nick Bosa Out For Preseason With 'Significant' Ankle Sprain

Aug 8, 2019 3:44 PM

Nick Bosa will skip the entire preseason with the San Francisco 49ers due to a "significant" ankle sprain.

John Lynch said Bosa does not have a "full-blown" high-ankle sprain, but there are "components" of that injury.

"It's a significant ankle sprain, and there's that dreaded high ankle sprain -- he doesn't have a full-blown one -- but it has some components of that," Lynch told KNBR. "As for timing, I think what we're comfortable saying -- and a lot is going to happen here with kind of the follow-up today, they've got the scans -- it's safe to say we won't see him in the preseason and then we're going to be very prudent."

Bosa has a long injury history as he missed most of his final season at Ohio State with a core muscle injury along with a hamstring injury during the 49ers' offseason program. Bosa also suffered a torn ACL in high school.

Nick Bosa's Ankle Sprain Not Considered Serious

Aug 8, 2019 8:14 AM

Nick Bosa suffered a right ankle sprain after leaving Wednesday's practice early, according to a source.

The San Francisco 49ers do not consider the injury serious.

With about 45 minutes left in the practice, Bosa appeared to get tangled up with multiple teammates on a running play off the right side and stayed down on the field after the play ended.

The 49ers used the No. 2 overall pick on the former Ohio State defender.
