Chip Kelly Alienated Eagles' Scouts Almost Immediately

Mar 30, 2016 3:33 PM

Howie Roseman took responsibility for the Philadelphia Eagles' decision to select Marcus Smith in the first round of 2014, but the decision sparked a feud that eventually ended with Chip Kelly's firing.

Roseman and the Eagles' scouting department had minimal input over the three drafts during Chip Kelly's tenure as head coach.

"Right before that draft, the scouts set the board," the person said Tuesday. "Then Chip got a hold of it and totally turned it around. Scouts had no say at all in that draft. Anybody that Chip didn't want, that player's card got removed from the board and thrown in the trash. Those guys were never even in the discussion.

"Almost immediately, you had a lot of scouts looking around and wondering, 'Why am I even working? Why the hell are we even here?' We put all of this work in, put the information in and Chip changed everything and took whoever he wanted to take."

The source said Kelly's unorthodox approach to draft night immediately alienated several members of the front office and scouting department.

Kelly and Tom Gamble had a semi-functional collaboration.

"The Eagles brought in some of Tom's guys to make some changes in the scouting department, and Howie's guys were kind of pushed aside a little bit," the person said. "Howie really wasn't listened to. Chip would listen to Gamble, but he wouldn't listen to Howie. It just wasn't a good relationship.

"Everything hit the fan after that (2014) season. Chip left town almost immediately. Howie fired [Gamble] and then Chip gets hold of it, comes right back to the building and put his foot down [to owner Jeffrey Lurie].

"I knew right there it was the beginning of the end for Chip. He did everything he wanted. He had to win and win big to hold onto his job after that season. Meanwhile, Howie was away from personnel decisions, preparing to be back in charge, if that chance ever came."

49ers To Keep Colin Kaepernick Unless They're 'Blown Away' By Offer

Mar 30, 2016 11:41 AM

The San Francisco 49ers plan on keeping Colin Kaepernick through the deadline of when his contract becomes fully guaranteed on April 1st unless they are "blown away" by an offer.

The Denver Broncos are the only team still legitimately interested in Kaepernick. John Elway values Kaepernick at a fourth round pick level.

Kaepernick's $11.9 million base salary will be fully guaranteed for 2016 on April 1st.

Trent Baalke and Chip Kelly both reiterated over the past month that they want him as their QB for 2016.

Chip Kelly 'Impressed' By Improvement Of Blaine Gabbert

Mar 25, 2016 12:53 PM

Chip Kelly has consistently spoken highly of Colin Kaepernick, but he's also praised the improvement of Blaine Gabbert.

"(I'm) impressed with Blaine," Kelly said, via CSN Bay Area. "You watch him the last couple of games he started. He's another guy, you look at his skill set. He took off against the Bears and went (44) yards for a touchdown. He ran 4.61 in the combine when he was coming out.

"He's big. I'd never really dealt with Blaine because he came into the league before I came into the league, but just how big and physical and impressive he is. He's a 6-4, 245-pound guy that can really run. I thought the last part of the season he played really well. It'll be intriguing to work with him, too."

Jets, Browns No Longer Interested In Colin Kaepernick

Mar 27, 2016 1:44 PM

The New York Jets and Cleveland Browns are no longer pursuing Colin Kaepernick.

The Browns signed Robert Griffin III this week.

Kaepernick is left with the Denver Broncos as his only remaining logical suitor.

Kaepernick's $11.9 million salary becomes fully guaranteed on April 1 and the San Francisco 49ers do not plan to cut him before that date.

The Broncos would have to trade for Kaepernick and the 49ers have so far been unwilling to deal him without a substantial return.

Chip Kelly On Kaepernick: He Got Hurt, He Didn't Fall Off

Mar 23, 2016 12:02 PM

Chip Kelly and Trent Baalke have differing opinions on why Colin Kaepernick lost his job last season as starting quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers.

“It’s not like his skill set diminished," Kelly told Denver's 9 News Tuesday. "I mean he went on injured reserve last year. He only played half the season. He was legitimately injured. He’s in the process of rehabbing right now – he had a shoulder, had a thumb, had a knee. That’s where when people look at where he fell off -- he didn’t fall off. He got hurt."

When Kaepernick went to injured reserve, Baalke claimed the injury had nothing to do with the benching.

Kaepernick suffered the shoulder injury -- a torn left labrum -- in an Oct. 4 loss to the Packers. The thumb tear came Oct. 22 against the Seahawks and the knee injury in the following game against the Rams.

Kaepernick's agents have been seeking a trade, but Kelly continues to lobby for him to remain with the 49ers.

Kelly said he's spoken regularly to Kaepernick and that the quarterback "knows I'd love to have him."

Jim Harbaugh Prepared To Give Glowing Recommendation For Kaepernick

Mar 22, 2016 7:19 PM

Jim Harbaugh says no NFL teams have called him for an evaluation of Colin Kaepernick, but he's prepared to give a glowing recommendation.

Harbaugh was the San Francisco 49ers' coach when Kaepernick was drafted by the team in 2011 and had his greatest success in the NFL.

Kaepernick's agents requested permission from the 49ers on Feb. 26 to seek a trade for their client.

"Anybody that talks to me is going to get a great recommendation that's going to knock their socks off," Harbaugh told the newspaper in a telephone interview.

Browns Call Colin Kaepernick Trade Reports 'Way Over-Reported'

Mar 21, 2016 2:04 PM

Sashi Brown says the possibility of the Cleveland Browns trading with the San Francisco 49ers for Colin Kaepernick has been "way over-reported."

The 49ers reportedly reached out to the Browns to gauge their interest in Kaepernick.

The Browns also have some level of interest in Robert Griffin III.

Cleveland won't bring in both Kaepernick and Griffin.

49ers Likely To Keep Colin Kaepernick Past April 1st

The San Francisco 49ers are expected to keep Colin Kaepernick past April 1st when his $11.9 million base salary for 2016 becomes guaranteed.

The 49ers, however, will look to trade Kaepernick before or during the April 28th-30th draft.

Last week, the Broncos, Jets and Browns each expressed interest in Kaepernick, but nothing was imminent.

Chip Kelly Talks With Kaepernick, Wants Him On 49ers

Mar 17, 2016 7:47 PM

Colin Kaepernick would like a trade from the San Francisco 49ers but Chip Kelly would like him to remain with the franchise.

Kelly said he talked to Kaepernick earlier this week and is staying hopeful he won't be traded when the offseason program begins on April 4th.

"I'd love to have him. I'm a big Kap fan," Kelly said Thursday after Stanford's pro day.

Last month, Kelly professed his commitment to Kaepernick during the NFL combine, only to have reports emerge soon after that saying the quarterback's agents had asked general manager Trent Baalke to be traded from San Francisco.
