Jarryd Hayne Retires From NFL

May 16, 2016 11:14 AM

Jarryd Hayne has announced his retirement from the NFL.

Hayne had a disappointing rookie season with the San Francisco 49ers but he insisted on continuing to work on his game this offseason.

Hayne is one of Australia's best rugby players.

"I am retiring from the NFL because the Fiji Rugby Sevens team reached out to me about the opportunity to join the team for the upcoming Olympics, and I simply could not pass that chance up," he said. "The Olympics has been something I have admired since I was a little boy, and it is an opportunity I feel very similar to me joining the NFL.

"The 49ers organization has been incredibly supportive throughout my journey and I cannot thank them and the support staff enough. I am especially grateful to the strength and conditioning coaches, trainers and medical staff, equipment guys, public relations crew, chefs, logistics, and merchandise staff for their countless hours helping me in many different ways, so I could focus on football. Thank you to the fans from down under, as well as those around the world, who stood behind me and supported me along this amazing journey. I also want to thank the boys, especially my running back brothers, for their help and support in my transition to the NFL. I wish the team nothing but the best for the upcoming season.

"Last but not least, I would like to thank the 49ers Faithful for your unwavering support. From day one you have always been in my corner and I can't thank you enough for the love you've shown for the kid from down under. Signing off, your mate, number 38."

Hayne had 17 rushing attempts for 52 yards and eight punt returns for 76 yards.

"We would like to thank Jarryd for his contributions to the San Francisco 49ers organization and our community over the last year," general manager Trent Baalke said in a statement. "Jarryd is a tremendous example of what can happen when you commit to a goal and do everything in your power to make it a reality. He earned the right to wear a 49ers uniform and compete alongside the best in the game. We fully support Jarryd's decision to pursue another dream - representing the Fiji Rugby Sevens team in this summer's Olympic games. We look forward to watching him in Rio and wish him continued success."

Chip Kelly Has Had Positive Interactions With Colin Kaepernick

May 13, 2016 3:55 PM

Colin Kaepernick remains on the San Francisco 49ers' roster after they were unable to trade him this offseason.

Chip Kelly said during an interview on KNBR that there’s been no negative impact on Kaepernick's relationship with the coaching staff.

“I understand there’s a business-side to this deal, and that’s why everybody has agents and that’s why we have a front office,” Kelly said. “On a football level and on a day-to-day basis and how we get along, it’s been fantastic. We set that kind of parameter to begin with: When you’re here, we’re going to coach the heck out of you. He understands that, and he’s been great with that. We haven’t had any ‘elephants in the room’ or anything to speak of from that standpoint. … I’ve had great interaction with Kap, and so has our quarterbacks coach, offensive coordinator and everybody in the building.”

49ers Enjoying 'Quicker, Very Detailed' System Of Chip Kelly

May 6, 2016 10:38 AM

The San Francisco 49ers' offensive players are enjoying working with Chip Kelly and learning his up-tempo system.

“In the past we had a lot of delay-of-games because either we’re not getting the play in time from upstairs or it’s just taking the quarterback too long to read the whole play out,”  Garrett Celek said, via CSNBayArea.com. “Where now, it’s a lot quicker. We have hand signals, so you can’t have 15 words through hand signals, stuff like that. It’s got to be boom, boom, boom. So when you got less verbiage, it’s easier to remember. It’s kind of genius.”

Torrey Smith called the system "very organized and very detailed."

The 49ers frequently snapped the ball late in the play clock under the tenure of Jim Harbaugh.

Colin Kaepernick Resumes Throwing, Likely To Remain With 49ers

May 5, 2016 7:08 PM

A trade of Colin Kaepernick is now unlikely following the 2016 NFL Draft.

The Denver Broncos and New York Jets both selected quarterbacks in the draft while the 49ers didn't pick one until the sixth round.

The Broncos were close to trading for Kaepernick but selected Paxton Lynch in the first round, moving up to trade for him.

“With Colin, I thought we were really close,” John Elway told MMQB’s Peter King. “That one surprised me a little.”

The Broncos wanted Kaepernick to take a pay cut as part of the trade.

Kaepernick has resumed throwing and will compete with Blaine Gabbert for the starting job.
