Vernon Davis Becomes Alex Smith's Best Friend

Sep 9, 2014 3:21 PM

The San Francisco 49ers selected Maryland tight end Vernon Davis with the sixth pick in Saturday's NFL draft. Davis should step in as a starter after four tight ends on the San Francisco roster combined for just 20 catches last season. The addition of Davis should also be a welcome addition for Smith, the club's quarterback of the future who was selected first overall last season. Davis saw his draft stock rise with impressive workouts at the scouting combine, where he ran a record time for a tight end in the 40-yard dash at 4.38 seconds. He also has a 42-inch vertical leap.

Niners Add A First Round Pick From Denver

Sep 9, 2014 3:19 PM

The San Francisco 49ers added a second first-round pick in next week's NFL draft by trading their second- and third-round picks to Denver on Wednesday for the 22nd overall selection. The 49ers, who already have the No. 6 pick after last season's 4-12 finish, sent the 37th and 68th overall choices to the Broncos, giving San Francisco two first-round picks for the first time since 2000. The move also might be a prelude to a gambit to move up again in the draft. Two players coveted by the 49ers -- Ohio State linebacker A.J. Hawk and North Carolina State defensive end Mario Williams -- are likely to be gone before San Francisco's first-round picks.

The Eagles, the Denver Broncos and the San Francisco 49ers are regarded in news reports as the leading suitors for disgruntled wide receiver Javon Walker, who has asked the Green Bay Packers to trade him. The Eagles quietly wouldn?t confirm or deny interest in Walker, who still isn?t all the way back from a torn anterior cruciate ligament sustained in the 2005 regular season opener. Kennard McGuire, the agent for Walker, could not be reached for comment.

Chargers Trade For Niners' WR Rashaun Woods

Oct 14, 2014 7:27 AM

The San Diego Chargers added another weapon to their offensive arsenal Wednesday afternoon by trading for former 49ers wide receiver Rashaun Woods. In exchange for the 6-2, 205 pound pass catcher, the Bolts sent cornerback Sammy Davis to San Francisco. Woods was a first round selection (31st overall) in the 2004 draft after breaking nearly every school and Big XII receiving record at Oklahoma State. In his four years in Stillwater, Woods caught 293 passes for 4,414 yards (15.1 avg.) and 42 touchdowns. The Oklahoma City native caught seven balls for 170 yards and a touchdown as a rookie. Woods spent the final 13 weeks of the 2005 season on injured reserve after undergoing an operation on his thumb last September.
