Roman On The Verge Of Signing With San Francisco

The 49ers appear on the verge of signing former Green Bay safety Mark Roman, who started all but one game for the Packers the past two seasons. ESPN.com reported early Saturday the 29-year-old Roman has agreed to terms with the 49ers. Roman, on the outs with Packers management this off-season, was released by Green Bay on Thursday. Joel Segal, Roman's agent, did not return a phone call.

John Brodie thinks his old No. 12 jersey will be a perfect fit on Trent Dilfer with the San Francisco 49ers. Brodie's jersey was unofficially unretired on Friday after the 49ers' first practice of training camp. The longtime San Francisco quarterback, who still has trouble speaking after a stroke nearly six years ago, grinned and laughed as he ceded the number to Dilfer, his longtime friend and golfing buddy.

After engaging in all-night discussions with the San Francisco 49ers, agents for sixth overall choice Vernon Davis made him the highest-paid tight end in the league. Davis signed a five-year deal Friday morning worth in excess of $23 million and possibility close to around $25 million. The rookie's deal is more lucrative than that of Giants tight end Jeremy Shockey, The Chiefs' Tony Gonzalez, Raven Todd Heap, the Cowboys' Jason Witten and the Falcons' Alge Crumpler who make between $4.14 million and $4.5 million a year.

The 49ers traded backup quarterback Cody Pickett to the Texans on Thursday for a conditional draft pick. Pickett started two games for the 49ers last season, and completed a franchise-low one pass in a loss to Chicago. But the former rodeo cowboy and U. of Washington star gained his greatest notoriety from a brief stint as a special-teams player covering kickoffs and punts. The 49ers will open training camp Friday with quarterbacks Trent Dilfer, Jesse Palmer and Shaun Hill vying to back up Alex Smith.

The 49ers signed third-round pick Brandon Williams to a four-year contract worth $2.275 million on Wednesday. Williams, a kick returner and receiver from Wisconsin, got a $675,000 signing bonus one day before the 49ers were scheduled to report to camp at their training complex. Williams set the Badgers' career record with 202 receptions in his four seasons as a starter.

The 49ers and Jerry Rice are working on plans for a retirement ceremony for the NFL's all-time leading receiver. The 49ers are hoping to make it a ceremony that appeals to its long-time fans. An announcement could come in August, according to team spokesman Aaron Salkin, with the possibility of a ceremony at halftime of the 49ers' home game against Seattle on Nov.19. "We're trying to do that," Salkin said Wednesday. "We've been in talks with Jerry." Rice, 43, said he would like to sign a one-day deal and joked that he would like to play in the game. "Why not?" he said. "Sign with them for a day and just give the fans a big 'Thank you' for all the support they have given me over the years, all the inspiration to go out there and play my best football."

The 49ers would consider moving to Santa Clara if plans for a new San Francisco stadium fall through, team and city officials said Tuesday. "If for whatever reason things don't work out in San Francisco, we need to have a backup," said Lisa Lang, vice president of communications for the 49ers. Team vice president and chief financial officer Larry MacNeil has met twice with Santa Clara city officials in the past month to discuss the option of building a stadium in the parking lot of the Great America amusement park, said Ron Garratt, Santa Clara's assistant city manager.

The San Francisco 49ers unveiled an updated design plan for a new stadium at Candlestick Point that would add enough seats to host a major event such as the Olympics. The team hopes to finance the building of the new stadium that is estimated to cost between $600 million and $800 million entirely through private funding. The planned 68,000-seat, open-air venue could be expanded up to 80,000 seats for larger events such as the Olympics. The new stadium would offer expansive views of the city skyline and San Francisco Bay.
