Will 49ers Give QB Hamdan Chance To Show Off Skills?

May 19, 2014 9:35 PM

Gibran Hamdan stepped back confidently and fired a hard pass into the end zone that skimmed a defender's fingertips and fell perfectly into a surprised receiver's hands. On his first full day of practice -- and perhaps his last -- with the San Francisco 49ers, Hamdan showed plenty of the skills that made him NFL Europe's Offensive Player of the Year this season. Whether he'll get the chance to show off his talent with the 49ers still hasn't been decided.

Rice Signs One-Day Contract To Retire With San Francisco

Oct 27, 2014 3:35 AM

Jerry Rice signed a one-day contract to retire with the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday, officially ending the receiver's matchless career back where it began. Rice, who played the first 16 of his 20 NFL seasons with San Francisco, shed no tears during a short signing ceremony at the 49ers' training complex. The receiver wore his ring from the 49ers' 1989 Super Bowl championship team on a chain around his neck as he hugged his wife, Jackie, and shook hands with San Francisco owner John York. "I would like to put the uniform on and run on that football field, but I think it's time to move on," Rice said, gesturing toward the practice fields behind him. "I feel welcome here. I feel like this is my home, and this is something I'll never forget."

Barlow Apologizes For Comparing Coach Nolan To Hitler

Sep 19, 2014 2:18 AM

Jets running back Kevan Barlow apologized to 49ers coach Mike Nolan for comparing him to Adolf Hitler in a newspaper interview. Barlow, who was traded from San Francisco to New York on Sunday for a fourth-round pick, made his inflammatory comments to the Contra Costa Times. The often outspoken Barlow said after practice Wednesday he left a detailed message for Nolan. "If I could take it back, I would," Barlow said. "I was very emotional. All I knew at the time was San Francisco, that was where I started my career, that's where my house was. It was a shock to me. "I'm a passionate player, I'm an emotional guy when it comes to on the field and off the field. Sometimes it gets the best of us. I put it behind me, and I'm glad to be a Jet."

Barlow On Nolan: "He Walks Around Like He's Hitler"

May 17, 2014 11:56 PM

Kevan Barlow, who was traded to the Jets on Sunday, lashed out at Coach Mike Nolan and the direction of the franchise in a series of phone calls to the Contra Costa Times on Tuesday. ``Nolan just doesn't know what he's doing. He's a first-time head coach with too much power,'' Barlow said from New York. ``He has too much power as a first-time head coach. He walks around with a chip on his shoulder, like he's a dictator, like he's Hitler. People are scared of him. If it ain't Nolan's way, it's the highway.'' Two phone calls later, Barlow softened his stance and blamed some of his statements on the emotional whirlwind he endured the previous 48 hours. ``I was kind of harsh on him, saying he's a dictator. That's bad. Saddam Hussein is a dictator,'' Barlow said three hours after his initial call. ``I was speaking on emotion.''

Barlow Dealt To New York

Nov 5, 2014 10:55 AM

The New York Jets acquired running back Kevan Barlow from the San Francisco 49ers for an undisclosed draft pick in 2007, their second attempt in a week to shore up the position. The deal is contingent on Barlow passing a physical. On Aug. 14, the Jets traded for Browns running back Lee Suggs, hoping to get help with Curtis Martin out. But Suggs failed his physical and the deal was voided. The Jets are in desperate need of help at running back. Martin has been on the physically-unable-to-perform list since training camp opened with a lingering knee injury.

The Redskins traded receiver Taylor Jacobs to the 49ers for cornerback Mike Rumph on Monday, a swap of oft-injured former high-round draft picks. Rumph was a first-round selection from the University of Miami in 2002, but he missed most of 2004 with a broken arm and played in only three games in 2005 because of a foot injury.

49ers Newberry Out For Season

Feb 13, 2014 6:55 PM

Jeremy Newberry's comeback from chronic knee problems took a major setback Saturday when it was determined the 49ers center will be lost for the season because he needs surgery. Newberry, who has missed 20 games over the past two seasons, will need a microfracture surgery. Niners coach Mike Nolan announced Saturday that Newberry will be placed on the season-ending injured reserve list.

Rice Leads Group Into College Football Hall Of Fame

Dec 2, 2014 6:06 PM

Jerry Rice was happy Saturday to be at the College Football Hall of Fame induction dinner, where he was recognized for his footwork on the football field rather than the dance floor. Rice said wherever he goes these days, he hears people talk about the fact that he reached the finals of "Dancing with the Stars." "You hear whispers: 'He's the dancer.' All those touchdowns, and they remember the dancing," he said to the laughter of the crowd. Rice also took some ribbing because he had just two catches in the flag football game Saturday afternoon. "They were trying to shut me down," he said.
