The San Francisco 49ers selected Maryland tight end Vernon Davis with the sixth pick in Saturday's NFL draft. Davis should step in as a starter after four tight ends on the San Francisco roster combined for just 20 catches last season. The addition of Davis should also be a welcome addition for Smith, the club's quarterback of the future who was selected first overall last season. Davis saw his draft stock rise with impressive workouts at the scouting combine, where he ran a record time for a tight end in the 40-yard dash at 4.38 seconds. He also has a 42-inch vertical leap.
