Steelers Release James Harrison, Activate Marcus Gilbert

Dec 23, 2017 3:28 PM

The Pittsburgh Steelers have released James Harrison.

Harrison played in just three games this season for the Steelers. Harrison signed with Pittsburgh in 2002 as an undrafted rookie.

"There was no animosity or bad feelings. It's just the business of the NFL," Bill Parise, Harrison's agent, told ESPN's Josina Anderson. "I believe he still wants to play. We'll have to wait and see what happens with waivers."

Pittsburgh activated Marcus Gilbert from the reserve/suspended by commissioner list.

Mike Tomlin: Catch Rule 'Needs To Be Revisited'

Dec 20, 2017 7:56 AM

Mike Tomlin, who is a member of the NFL's competition committee, declared Tuesday that the catch rule should be reviewed this offseason.

The Pittsburgh Steelers lost to the New England Patriots on Sunday afternoon after a late Jesse James touchdown was overturned.

"I think that we all can acknowledge that all of this needs to be revisited," Tomlin said. "It's not just that play. We're having similar discussions week in and week out. So as a member of the committee, I acknowledge that we've got our work cut out for us this offseason regarding a number of those things."

Antonio Brown Out For Regular Season With Partially Torn Calf

Dec 17, 2017 11:06 PM

Antonio Brown has suffered a partially torn calf muscle and will be out for at least the remainder of the regular season.

Brown caught two passes for 24 yards before he suffered the injury in the first half of Pittsburgh's loss to the Patriots.

"It changes. A.B. is significant," Mike Tomlin told reporters. "But I thought the guys did a nice job of adjusting and making plays largely. You lose somebody like A.B. and there's an adjustment."

Infographic: Five Teams Rank In Top-10 In Offense, Defense DVOA

Dec 13, 2017 12:30 PM

The NFL has five teams ranking in the top-10 in DVOA on both Offense and Defense after Week 14. In an indication of how much turnover there's been in parts of the NFL, none of those five teams (Rams, Eagles, Vikings, Saints and Chargers) made the playoffs in 2016.

The Chiefs, Cowboys, Steelers, Falcons and Patriots also rank in the top-10 on offense, while the Jaguars, Broncos, Panthers, Ravens and Cardinals rank in the top-10 on defense.

The Seahawks, who have consistently been one of the NFL's top teams in DVOA during the Russell Wilson era, are just outside the top-10 in both categories.

Steelers Place Ryan Shazier On IR

Dec 12, 2017 1:13 PM

The Pittsburgh Steelers have played Ryan Shazier on the reserve/injured list due to a spinal injury he suffered last Monday.

Shazier underwent spinal stabilization surgery on Dec. 6 in Pittsburgh, a surgery performed by UPMC neurosurgeons and Steelers team physicians Drs. David Okonkwo and Joseph Maroon.

“Unfortunately Ryan will not be able to contribute on the field during the remainder of this season,” said Steelers President Art Rooney II. “However, even off the field Ryan will continue to be one of our team leaders. We know his spirit and positive outlook will help him to continue in his recovery, as well as serve as an inspiration to our team.”

Ben Roethlisberger Becomes First QB With Three 500-Yard Games

Dec 11, 2017 8:45 AM

Ben Roethlisberger threw for more than 500 yards against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday night, becoming the first quarterback in NFL history to record three such games.

Drew Brees has two 500-yard performances in his career.

"Hall of Famer, it's as simple as that, and we are lucky he is on our team," Maurkice Pouncey said.

Roethlisberger needed every yard on Sunday as he led the Pittsburgh Steelers to a late come-from-behind win to clinch the AFC North title.

Juju Smith-Schuster, George Iloka Receive One Game Suspensions

Dec 5, 2017 2:42 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster and Cincinnati Bengals safety George Iloka were each suspended one game for hits in Monday's game.

Smith-Schuster was suspended for a vicious fourth-quarter block on Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict, who was deemed in the NFL's ruling to be in a defenseless posture.

"The contact you made with your opponent placed the opposing player at risk of serious injury and could have been avoided," NFL vice president of football operations Jon Runyan said in issuing the suspension. "Your conduct following the hit fell far below the high standards of sportsmanship expected of an NFL player."

Shazier suffered the injury in the first quarter and left the stadium in an ambulance.
