Mike Tomlin Expects Extension From Steelers

Jan 19, 2024 8:33 AM

Mike Tomlin says that his desire as head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers has "intensified" and that he expects to receive a contract extension this offseason.

"I expect to be back, and I would imagine that those contract things are going to run their course," Tomlin said. "Art [Rooney II] and I have a really good, transparent relationship. We communicate continually often. I don't imagine it's going to be an issue, and I imagine it's going to get done in a timely manner at the appropriate time, but my mindset is to coach his football team."

Rooney later told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette the team does "plan to extend Mike's contract."

Mike Tomlin Walks Off Podium Amid Question About Contract

Jan 16, 2024 1:33 AM

Mike Tomlin didn't wait to hear the rest of the question.

After losing to the Buffalo Bills in the wild-card round Monday evening, the Pittsburgh Steelers coach walked off the podium in the visitors interview room at Highmark Stadium when he was asked a question that began, "Mike, you have a year left on your contract."

Though he is under contract through the 2024 season, Tomlin's future with the organization after an NFL-record 17 consecutive non-losing seasons as the head coach has been the subject of rampant speculation.

Kenny Pickett Denies Rumors He Refused To Be Backup Quarterback

Jan 3, 2024 10:22 AM

Kenny Pickett has strongly denied rumors that he refused to dress as the backup to Mason Rudolph in the Pittsburgh Steelers' win over the Seattle Seahawks in Week 17.

"It was either I was going to start and play," Pickett said, "or if they didn't think I was good enough to do that, healthy enough, I was going to be the 3 and not dress."

Pickett had TightRope surgery for a high ankle sprain on Dec. 4 and was medically cleared to play late last week.

Pickett opened up a five-minute scrum with local media Tuesday by saying the rumors, which began spreading on social media Sunday night, were false and were "attacking my character and how I am as a person."

"There was no talk of me being a backup quarterback this week in terms of being a 2," Pickett said. "If I was healthy enough to play, and the trainers and coaches felt like I looked good enough to play, I was going to start and play. If they believed that I was not -- which they believed I was not -- I was not going to dress and suit up for the game.

"So, whoever reported that, I don't know where it started, it's kind of crazy what people will write and put out there to try to prove their point or help their standpoint or their careers and what you guys do. But disappointed to see that without any proof or basis of it."

Mason Rudolph To Start Despite Kenny Pickett Being Healthy

Jan 2, 2024 8:25 AM

The Pittsburgh Steelers will start Mason Rudolph in Week 18 despite Kenny Pickett being cleared to play in the team's regular season finale.

"Kenny's availability is less than question this week," Mike Tomlin said. "I anticipate him being available to practice. That being said, we've got to leave the ball in Mason Rudolph's hands. He's done a good job, and we've done a good job in the most recent two weeks. We've taken care of the ball. He's taking care of the ball. We score points at a rate and which we hadn't done to this point this year. And with the urgency of the moment and because of those reasons, we're going to leave the ball in his hands."

Pickett has been medically cleared to return following TightRope surgery on his ankle.

While the Steelers can make the playoffs even if they lose at Baltimore, their path is easier if they can beat the Ravens on Saturday and get help from other teams throughout the final weekend of games.
