Ben Roethlisberger: It Doesn't Matter How Close I Came To Retiring

May 25, 2017 8:20 AM

Ben Roethilsberger was asked how close he was to retiring from the NFL this offseason.

"It doesn't matter, I'm here now," said Roethlisberger.

"Honestly it doesn't even matter. I'm happy to be back here. I'm happy to be back with the team," Roethlisberger said Tuesday, via ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. "I love the city. I love these guys. I love being out here. Football is a passion of mine. It's what I do and it's what I love to do."

Roethlisberger said he's "110 percent committed" to 2017, but made zero promises about the future.

"I never commit to anybody more than one year," Roethlisberger said, via the team's official website. "I think that's all we should always commit to with this sport. Because if we look past this year, then we're cheating ourselves and we're cheating other people. We need to give this year everything that we can, everything that we have because ultimately that's what we have, right here and right now.

"I'm here on Day One. You see me out there taking every rep I'm supposed to take and then some. I actually took some of the rookies' (reps) today. I'm 110-percent committed."

Willie Colon: Ben Roethlisberger Seriously Considered Retirement

May 17, 2017 7:37 AM

Ben Roethlisberger's flirtation with retirement this offseason wasn't just talk.

Former Pittsburgh Steelers lineman Willie Colon, a teammate of Roethlisberger's for seven seasons, told PFT Live that Roethlisberger was seriously considering retiring before ultimately deciding to play the 2017 season.

"I got to sit down and talk to him and one thing he told me is he did take it seriously," Colon said. "He's dealt with a lot of injuries."

Colon believes that Pittsburgh's offensive line will determine if the quarterback considers retirement again next offseason.

"He's passionate about playing, but one thing that keeps his fire going is that offensive line," Colon said. "You have to worry about the health of Ben Roethlisberger. Can you keep him upright, can he stay healthy for the duration? They have the offensive line, they have the pieces around him to make it work."
