Steelers Run Game Off To Worst Start Since 1950

Sep 21, 2014 6:28 AM

The Pittsburgh Steelers running game is off to its worst start in 62 years, with 195 yards rushing and a 2.64-yards-per-carry average.

Isaac Redman has started the first three games as Rashard Mendenhall recovers from a torn ACL.

“We’re looking for him to come in and be the feature guy,” Redman said Thursday.

“We’ve got talented receivers, we’ve got a Superman at quarterback, and it’s easy to say that the pass is doing better,” left guard Willie Colon said. “To kind of sum it all up, we’ve got to put in more work.”

Redman and Jonathan Dwyer are inside runners, while Mendenhall is a turn-the-corner back capable of breaking a big run.

“But I don’t think (the running game) is too much different than it’s been,” Mendenhall said. “It might be perceived that we’re struggling, and it’s not the case. It’s a different offense, we’ve got some different guys, and we’re trying to figure out how to put it together.”

Roethlisberger Still Talks To Former OC Arians Weekly

May 18, 2014 4:40 AM

Ben Roethlisberger insists that he has no issue with offensive coordinator Todd Haley.

Roethlisberger used some of Bruce Arians' terminology to call no-huddle plays on Sunday against the Raiders.

“I really didn’t think it would get blown up as much as it did, and I know some people are saying that I’ve been resistant to Todd,” Roethlisberger said. “But it’s one of those things that we went to Todd, and it’s in the playbook now. It was simply a signal that I used with our receivers on two different occasions. One was on the fourth-and-1, we got the ball to Mike (Wallace). The other one was later on third down to Emmanuel (Sanders). We converted both plays. It worked out."

When asked about his close relationship with Arians, who is now the Colts’ offensive coordinator, Roethlisberger said, “We talk every week.”

McFadden, Raiders Defeat Steelers 34-31 (+9.0 TC, -11 TRC)

Sep 21, 2014 6:34 AM

The Oakland Raiders scored 13 fourth quarter points to record a 34-31 come-from-behind victory against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Both teams are now 1-2 for the season.

The Raiders had a +9.0 advantage in The Trench Counter, as they had 56 fewer penalty yards, one fewer turnover and a far more effective running game. The Steelers had a +11 edge in Total Rushes/Completions.

Carson Palmer went 24-for-34 for 209 yards with three touchdowns and one interception, but Darren McFadden's 18 yards for 113 yards and a 64-yard touchdown helped establish Oakland's offense.

Ben Roethlisberger went 36-for-49 for 484 yards and four touchdowns, spreading the ball amongst 10 targets. Mike Wallace caught eight balls for 123 yards and a touchdown.

But Pittsburgh's running game struggled against a Raiders' defense that itself struggled in that area against the Chargers and Dolphins. Isaac Redman had nine carries for 27 yards.

Smith, Roethlisberger Lead NFL In Sacks Taken Since 2011

May 17, 2014 11:41 PM

Alex Smith leads the NFL in sacks since the start of the 2011 season with 51.

Ben Roethlisberger is second with 48, followed by Blaine Gabbert with 45 and Aaron Rodgers with 44.

“Alex Smith has grown into a man,” Phil Simms said on “NFL Monday QB” on CBS. “Of course he’s being taught well, but he’s just gotten physically stronger. When you look at his first three or four years, I didn’t think he was strong enough to be an every-week starting quarterback. He is now.”

Jonathan Dwyer To Receive More Carries From Steelers

Oct 31, 2014 10:06 AM

The Pittsburgh Steelers will give Jonathan Dwyer more carries following his impressive running in Week 1 against the Broncos.

Dwyer ran nine times for 43 yards, a 4.8-yard average per carry and one touchdown that was overruled by replay in the 31-19 loss at Denver.

"I thought Jonathan Dwyer provided a spark play and represented himself well and will probably get an increased opportunity because of it," coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday.

Isaac Redman started at running back, carrying 11 times for just 20 yards.

Rashard Mendenhall continues to get closer to returning from a torn ACL and MCL.
