Ravens Won't Target Mike Wallace

Jun 29, 2014 8:09 PM

The Ravens appear unlikely to target Mike Wallace if the wide receiver hits the market. "The problem with going after restricted free agents, at that point, the player and the agent have the leverage because you have to do a deal that you don't think the other team is going to match," Baltimore general manager Ozzie Newsome said. With restricted free agents, the player's current team offers a tender, meaning any team that wants to sign him would have to give up a draft pick that corresponds with the tender. In the case of Wallace, Pittsburgh is likely to place a first-round tender on him.

Mike Wallace Openly Flirts With 49ers, Patriots

Jul 16, 2014 11:40 AM

The Steelers are worried about losing Mike Wallace and the wide receiver appears to be flirting with other clubs. In an interview with SiriusXM Radio, Wallace, a restricted free agent, discussed the potential of joining either the Patriots or 49ers, who lack a deep threat. "Most definitely. Those are two playoff caliber teams. Super Bowl caliber teams," Wallace said. "I think that the right person or the right piece for those guys could put them over the top. All they need is one more piece ... most definitely, those are Super Bowl contending teams." Wallace later added: "I love being in a winning organization. And the quarterback. I don't care how good you are, you won't do well without a good quarterback."

Steelers Worried Mike Wallace Could Leave

May 17, 2014 10:05 PM

Mike Wallace will become a restricted free agent in three weeks and there is concern in Pittsburgh that the young receiver may not return. A team that wants to sign Wallace would only have to forfeit a first-round pick to Pittsburgh. In the past, signing Wallace away would have cost a first-round pick and a third-round pick. The Steelers are in bad shape when it comes to cap space as well. Any other team with a restricted free agent like Wallace would put the franchise tag on him, but the Steelers would have to cut a bunch of other players to squeeze the $9.4 million franchise tender under their salary cap.

Roethlisberger Still Waiting To Hear From Haley

Oct 31, 2014 5:05 AM

Ben Roethlisberger is still waiting to hear from Todd Haley, Pittsburgh's new offensive coordinator. "He still hasn't called yet," Roethlisberger said. Roethlisberger was "shocked" coordinator Bruce Arians wasn't retained. "I've gotten a lot of calls and texts and emails from people around the league, both good and bad about him," Roethlisberger said of Haley. "Everybody has an opinion, as we all know, and they're letting me know what their interaction with him was -- good, bad and indifferent. I've heard a lot of things and I'm looking forward to meeting him and forming my own opinion."

Roethlisberger Could Redo Contract To Help Steelers

May 25, 2014 12:34 AM

The Steelers have serious issues with the salary cap and they'll have to redo some contracts in order to re-sign their free agents this offseason. Ben Roethlisberger and James Harrison are open to restructuring their contracts to help the team. As of Feb. 6, the Steelers were $22.5 million over the cap. They have restructured contracts for a number of players -- Ike Taylor, LaMarr Woodley and Lawrence Timmons -- and have also cut cornerback Bryant McFadden and receiver Arnaz Battle.

Wallace May Receive Pittsburgh's High Tender

Sep 25, 2014 12:19 AM

The Steelers plan to retain Mike Wallace, but how they'll do so remains to be seen. Maneuvering for more cap space, Kevin Colbert has let it be known that Pittsburgh will let its free agents hit the open market. Wallace would be a restricted free agent coming off back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons. NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora suggested Tuesday that it's "more likely" the Steelers will place the highest free-agent tender on Wallace than use the franchise tag. As a restricted free agent under the highest tender, other teams would have to part ways with a first-round pick as well as ante up a new contract for Wallace.
