Former Steelers quarterback Kordell Stewart retired on Wednesday, seven years after last stepping on an NFL field.
Stewart, 39, said he needed closure in his life.
He plans to signed a one-day contract with the Steelers before "officially" stepping away from the game.

Roethlisberger Sees Progress In Offense
The Steelers are implementing a new offense, but Ben Roethlisberger says things are running smoothly during Organized Team Activities.
Roethlisberger says that he and his offensive teammates are getting a better idea of what's expected of them in Haley's offense.
"Every day we're getting a little bit better, learning something new every day and taking the things we know and trying to apply little things to it -- you see the receivers and I talking after plays, we'll talk about 'Take this many steps, and not this,' and that's making progress," the quarterback said.
Farrior May Be Close To Retirement
James Farrior appears to be heading towards retirement.
The Steelers cut the long-time linebacker this offseason.
Farrior's agent Ralph Cindrich told KDKA over the weekend that Farrior is considering officially retiring, although he hasn't made up his mind just yet.
Mendenhall Plans To Play At Some Point In 2012
Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall tore his ACL on January 1, leaving his status for the 2012 season in doubt.
There have been reports suggesting Pittsburgh isn't counting on Mendenhall to play early in 2012, but he fully expects to play and he's not ruling out a Week 1 return.
"They never said a time. With a knee, it can take anywhere from six to 12 months, so everybody's time frame is different," Mendenhall said. "I'll be back at some point. It's just a matter of what point that is."
Roethlisberger Has No Issues With Todd Haley
The relationship between Ben Roethlisberger and new Steelers offensive coordinator Todd Haley has been heavily criticized.
The scrutiny started when the quarterback and coach took several weeks to meet for the first time and continued this month when Roethlisberger said he was still "confused" about Haley's plans for the offense.
Roethlisberger said this week that any relationship issues have been blown out of proportion.
"People blew it way out of proportion," Roethlisberger said.
"It's something new, we're getting to know each other ... There's no trouble between us at all. When you get a comfort level of like eight years of the same thing and then you change it, it's just something different, so I'm not saying I don't like the playbook or anything like that. Some of the stuff is really - some of the concepts are awesome, it's just getting an understanding of something new."
Steelers Switching Colon To Left Guard
Willie Colon, who restructured his deal to remain with the Steelers, said Wednesday that he is now playing left guard.
He looked like the favorite to start at right tackle, but Colon's size has long made him a candidate to kick inside.
"I've made the transition to left guard," Colon said. "I like it. It's just a matter of learning the verbiage."
Roethlisberger Thinks 49ers Targeted Ankle
Ben Roethlisberger, who faced the 49ers in Week 15 on an injured ankle, believes the team may have targeted his weak joint.
The quarterback played poorly as Pittsburgh lost.
"Um, wow, that's tough," Roethlisberger said in an interview when asked if he felt a team ever tried to injure him.
"I don't really complain about that stuff, either. But I think when we played San Fran, I felt like there were some things going on, some extra ... Now, obviously, I did have the ankle and I was playing, so there was kind of a bull's-eye on there anyway. But for the most part, guys play tough and you go into a game expecting it. I expect to be tougher than them."
Roethlisberger Graduates From Miami University
Ben Roethlisberger has graduated from Miami University in Ohio, about nine years after leaving for the NFL.
Roethlisberger, 30, received his bachelor's degree in education and joined nearly 600 students during Sunday's commencement at the campus in Oxford.
