Le'Veon Bell: Steelers Don't Treat You Like You're Human

Mar 20, 2019 11:08 AM

Le'Veon Bell fought for his free agency from the Pittsburgh Steelers after he was not offered the type of contract he sought. Bell signed with the New York Jets on a four-year, $52.5 million deal.

“Pittsburgh is a great organization,” Bell told Jenny Vrentas of SI.com. “They’ve got a great owner, head coach. They kind of treat you like — they don’t treat you like you’re human. What I mean by that is like, yeah, I’m an NFL athlete, but still I’m a human being. You know what I’m saying? I still play video games, I still make music. They don’t want to allow you to be yourself. They want you to be, if you’re a Steelers, you’re literally playing football 24/7. You’re not supposed to be playing video games and like making music, playing basketball. You’re not supposed to be doing that. You’re supposed to be working out.”

Le'Veon Bell Has No Regrets About Sitting Out

Mar 15, 2019 8:29 AM

Le'Veon Bell has no regrets about sitting out last season and perhaps overplaying his negotiating hand as he entered free agency.

Bell said he's very happy with the "beautiful deal" he got from the New York Jets.

The running back signed a four-year, $52.5 million contract, including $25 million guaranteed at signing.

"I don't regret anything that had happened," Bell said. "Everything's happened for a reason. Who can say that if I played last year, you know, if I do go out and play last year on a one-year franchise tag, if I do get hurt, do I end up sitting in this position today, being with the New York Jets on a beautiful deal?"

Le'Veon Bell Agrees To Four-Year, $52.5M Deal With Jets

Mar 14, 2019 8:19 AM

Le'Veon Bell has agreed to sign a four-year, $52.5 million contract with the New York Jets.

The deal contains $35 million in guaranteed money for Bell. The maximum value could hit $61 million with incentives.

Bell sat out the entire 2018 season after he was unable to agree upon a long-term contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Bell became a free agent when the Steelers elected not to use a franchise or transition tag on him.

The San Francisco 49ers also made a strong offer for Bell. The Baltimore Ravens, meanwhile, never made an offer.

Bell's average salary per year with the Jets, $13.25 million, would rank him second among running backs in the NFL, behind Todd Gurley's $14.37 million average.

The Steelers offered Bell $70 million last offseason but contained only $17 million in guarantees. Todd Gurley and David Johnson received between $31 million and $45 million in guarantees. Bell called the Steelers' $70 million "Monopoly money." Bell's contract with the Jets doubles his guaranteed money even if it doesn't make up the $14.5 million in lost 2018 money.
