Jets Tried To Convince Le'Veon Bell To Attend OTAs

May 31, 2019 8:36 AM

The New York Jets tried unsuccessfully to convince Le'Veon Bell to attend voluntary offseason workouts.

Defensive tackle Steve McLendon, who was a teammate of Bell's for three seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, also tried to get Bell to attend the workouts.

"I talked to him and I told him, 'You understand this place is different than Pittsburgh,'" McLendon said. "I said, 'You need to get back so you can understand the quarterback and the situation.' ... I told him, 'The media is gonna get you if you don't come back.' That's the truth. I did tell him that."

McLendon's main pitch to Bell was that getting to know Sam Darnold is important.

"You just want to get to know your teammates, especially when we have a young quarterback," McLendon said. "He needs to know your rhythm, he needs to know how patient you are. It's easy to see on the film but it's so hard to prepare with because [Bell] is very dynamic in the things that he can do. Out of the backfield, in the backfield, lining up at wide receiver, he can do a lot of special things, and for me it's very amazing to have him on our team."

Adam Gase Calls Jets Trading Le'Veon Bell 'Ridiculous'

May 23, 2019 11:14 AM

Adam Gase dismissed the possibility of the New York Jets trading Le'Veon Bell.

Gase was reportedly against the signing of Bell in free agency. Gase is now interim general manager following the firing of Mike Maccagnan.

“That’s ridiculous,” Gase said.

Gase emphasized that Bell is a “great person,” who has been in “constant contact” with him regarding Bell’s offseason training regimen.

“The contract was what it was,” Gase said. “Everybody can criticize contracts all you want. He’s here. I’m excited, the players are excited, the coaches are excited.”

Peyton Manning Unlikely To Become GM Without Ownership Stake

May 22, 2019 6:59 PM

Peyton Manning has been linked with several franchises in a front office role similar to John Elway with the Denver Broncos. Most recently, Manning has been linked with the New York Jets.

Manning reportedly won't take a front office job without an ownership stake.

"The whole thing about Peyton Manning, I do not see that happening," writes Jay Glazer. "Manning is not going to be a GM somewhere and work for team presidents, he’s going to be part of an ownership group. I could see him wanting a little equity."

Adam Gase's Passive-Aggressive Power Struggle Led To Maccagnan Exit

May 17, 2019 6:31 PM

New York Jets CEO Christopher Johnson had reservations about retaining Mike Maccagnan as general manager after the season.

But the firing of Maccagnan is believed to have been triggered by Adam Gase winning a passive-aggressive power struggle.

Gase tried to distance himself from the Jets' draft decisions even before it began. Gase rarely gave input on trade possibilities or prospects. Gase never fought for or objected to any of Maccagnan's picks.

Gase was believed to have been angered by Maccagnan not seeking his opinion on any decisions during organizational discussions.

“It pissed Adam off,” a team source said. “Mike didn’t want him to speak up too much. It’s a weird philosophy.”

Maccagnan didn't want the Jets' scouts influenced by Gase's opinion.

Gase will now essentially hand pick the next general manager of the Jets.

“I don’t think he wants to screw a lot of people over,” one Jets employee said of Gase. “Because he feels like he already kind of did that.”

Adam Gase Opposed Jets Signing Le'Veon Bell

May 15, 2019 2:39 PM

Adam Gase and Mike Maccagnan disagreed on whether the New York Jets should sign Le'Veon Bell in free agency.

Gase made the argument that he didn't want the Jets to spend a lot of money on any running back.

Bell signed a four-year, $52.5 million contract with the Jets as a free agent.

The Jets fired Maccagnan on Wednesday and elevated Gase to interim GM.
