April 2009 - New York Jets Wiretap
Jets Release Favre
Brett Favre was released by the Jets on Tuesday night, making the quarterback a free agent if he decides to again come out of retirement, according to an Associated Press report.
The 39-year-old Favre, who spent one season with New York, had requested the move several weeks ago through agent Bus Cook, but insisted he has no plans to come out of retirement.
?Nothing has changed,? Favre said in a statement. ?At this time, I am retired and have no intention of returning to football.?
Sanchez Could Make $10M In Endorsements
Mark Sanchez could make as much as $10 million in endorsements in 2010 if he thrives at the Jets' quarterback.
Part of the reason, in addition to playing a high-profile position in New York, is his Spanish heritage.
"The Hispanic market is such a desirable market for the major brands that are involved in the NFL," said Jan Katzoff, executive vice president for sports and entertainment for the Radiate Group. "A young player with a Hispanic background would resonate very well with that marketplace."
Jets Sign College Basketball Player
The New York Jets signed J'Nathan Bullock on Monday, who was one of the Horizon League's top players in basketball last season for Cleveland State.
The 6-5, 240-pound Bullock, signed as a tight end prospect, was a standout football player in high school.
GM: Jets Inquired About Burress
Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum admitted on Sunday that he inquired about free-agent receiver Plaxico Burress before the NFL draft began on Saturday.
Tannenbaum said that "consistent with our normal approach of performing our due diligence, we contacted Drew Rosenhaus several days ago, prior to the draft, to inquire about Plaxico's pending legal situation."
He went on to say that he hasn't spoken to Rosenhaus or Burress since the initial conversation.
Jets Trade Up Again, Take Greene With 65th Pick
The Jets traded up to the first pick in the third round on Sunday, drafting Iowa running back Shonn Greene.
They sent the Lions a third-round, fourth-round and a seventh-round pick in order to grab Greene.
New York made headlines on Saturday by moving up to the fifth pick in order to select USC quarterback Mark Sanchez.
"I think they really believe in my talent and my potential to trade up and get me," Greene said of going to the Jets. "I'm just going to work my hardest to satisfy ... and help the team win."
Sanchez: I'm Excited To Be A Jet
USC quarterback Mark Sanchez was coveted by a number of teams heading into the first round of this year's NFL Draft, and the Jets ultimately ended up trading up to the fifth pick to grab him.
"Oh my God, yes," Sanchez said when learning of his new team, according to ESPN. "Thank you so much. You guys are the best. Thank you so much. This is a dream come true."
The Jets were left without a true starting quarterback when Brett Favre retired yet again, and now Sanchez should immediately step in and supplant Kellen Clemens as their starter.
"Joe Namath handled the pressure well and the people really loved him. I think when you win like that, that's the great equalizer and everybody loves a winner. That's what I'm used to at USC and that's what hopefully we can get accomplished here in New York," Sanchez said in a statement.
Jets Trade For 5th Pick, Take Sanchez
The Browns traded the fifth overall pick to the Jets on Saturday afternoon, and New York used the pick to take USC quarterback Mark Sanchez.
The Jets sent defensive end Kenyon Coleman, quarterback Brett Ratliff and defensive back Abram Elam, a first-round pick (17th overall) and a second-round pick (52nd).

Jets In Talks With Browns About 5th Pick?
Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum has admitted that the team is looking to move up higher in Saturday's NFL Draft.
New York currently holds the 17th pick in the first round.
The Jets are reportedly interested in moving up to take USC quarterback Mark Sanchez, who a number of teams appear to have interest in.
According to league sources, the Jets have had discussions with the Browns about the fifth overall pick.
Will Jets Make Run At Sanchez?
The Jets are expected to make an attempt to move up in the first round of Saturday's NFL Draft to take quarterback Mark Sanchez.
New York holds the 17th overall pick in the draft.
The only problem that the Jets might encounter is that Sanchez has skyrocketed up draft boards lately, and if he goes in the top five it's unlikely that New York will be able to move up high enough to take him.
"Sanchez has great toughness," one GM said this week. "Very good accuracy. He's overt in terms of leadership. He's not as athletic as Steve Young or one of those guys. But he can move. He's got good poise and a good aura to him. He breeds confidence."
