Jets Embracing Ryan's 46 Roots
New head coach Rex Ryan's presence is already having an influence on the Jets, who have reportedly embraced his background with the 46 defense.
Ryan's father Buddy invented the defensive formation and named his innovative defense after Chicago safety Doug Plank, who wore No .46.
Ryan has reportedly hired Plank as the Jets' assistant defensive backs coach.
Jets, Schottenheimer Agree On Contract Extension
The Jets have reportedly signed offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer to a contract extension that will keep him with the club.
Schottenheimer, 35, had one year left on a contract that paid him roughly $1.5 million this upcoming season.
It's believed he received a two-year extension that'll bump his salary to nearly $2 million in 2009.
Brian Schottenheimer Likely To Stay With Jets
New Jets ' coach Rex Ryan and owner Woody Johnson met with offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer Thursday, and he is expected to remain with the team.
People close to Schottenheimer have said he's likely stay because he's under contract and values integrity. He also didn't have many attractive offers to coach elsewhere.
Jets' Johnson Still Willing To Wait On Favre
Jets' owner Woody Johnson still hopes that Brett Favre is the team's quarterback in 2009, but said that new coach Rex Ryan will have input and that GM Mike Tannenbaum will have final say.
"I'm not going to bully them," Johnson said, "but I like [Favre], and I think we can win with him."
The Jets reportedly don't plan to talk with Favre about his future until next month.
Could Ryan Bring Ray Lewis To Jets?
There is some belief that new Jets coach Rex Ryan could help the team land Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis, who could become a free agent this March.
Ryan coached Lewis for a decade in Baltimore, but it's unlikely that the Jets will be able to afford both Lewis and quarterback Brett Favre as they are already $10 million over the salary cap.
Favre Won't Play In Pro Bowl
Jets' quarterback Brett Favre has pulled out of February's Pro Bowl in Hawaii, likely because of a shoulder injury.
Favre, who is reportedly considering retirement, rarely played in the Pro Bowl when he was with the Packers.
Rex Ryan To Jets Now Official, $12M Over 4 Years?
The New York Jets officially announced the hiring of Rex Ryan Monday evening.
The team did not disclose the terms of the deal, but it is four years and between $11-12 million, according to league sources.
The Jets interviewed eight candidates before picking Ryan. He has been the leading candidate for the last week. The team offered him the job late Sunday night after the Ravens lost to Pittsburgh in the AFC title game.
Report: Jets To Name Ryan Their Coach
Just moments after Sunday?s AFC championship game ended, multiple media outlets reported that Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan will be named the coach of the Jets on Monday or Tuesday.
The Ravens? season ended with a loss to the Steelers on Sunday, freeing Ryan to accept the job with the Jets.
Ryan is expected to be named the coach on Monday and formally introduced on Tuesday, the New York Daily News reported.
Jets Not Interested In Gruden
Sources from the Jets have already stated that they won't be interested in hiring Jon Gruden.
The Jets are content to await the results of this weekend's playoff games and Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan remains atop their wish list, followed by current offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer. Cardinals assistant head coach/offensive line coach Russ Grimm is also in the mix but Ryan is the clear favorite.
Spagnuolo Has Secret Meeting With Jets
Giants' defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo reportedly had a secret second interview with the Jets on Tuesday regarding the team's vacant head coaching position.
The meeting was scheduled because Jets owner Woody Johnson was out of the country when Spagnuolo initially interview for the position on Jan. 3.
Spagnuolo interviewed with the Rams on Thursday, and he is believed to be one of the finalists for that job, as well.
