Tyler Boyd: Bengals Would've Beaten Chiefs If I Was Healthy

May 31, 2023 8:36 AM

Tyler Boyd believes he was the missing factor that kept the Cincinnati Bengals from making back-to-back Super Bowl appearances.

Boyd suffered a deep thigh bruise early in the second quarter of the 23-20 loss. He said he would have finished the game if he was at least 80 percent healthy.

In his first day of offseason workouts, the veteran wide receiver met with reporters for the first time since the AFC championship loss to Kansas City.

"Still to this day, I feel like if I would have played the whole game, I was the key factor," Boyd said. "We would've won the game."

At the time of the injury, Boyd had two catches for 40 yards.

Patrick Mahomes: I Worry About Winning Rings More Than Money

May 24, 2023 10:05 PM

Over the past few seasons, Patrick Mahoes has dropped to seventh in the NFL among quarterbacks in annual salary.

Mahomes became the NFL's highest-paid player in summer 2020 when he signed a 10-year extension worth $450 million. No player has since topped that contract in terms of total value, but six other quarterbacks have passed him in average pay.

"I've always said I worry about legacy and winning rings more than making money at this moment," he said. "We see what's going on around the league, but at the same time, I'll never do anything that's going to hurt us from keeping the great players around me. So it's kind of teetering around that line."

Mahomes will likely fall further down when Joe Burrow and Justin Herbert sign long-term deals.

"You just want to do whatever to not hurt other quarterbacks [financially]," Mahomes said. "Whenever their contracts come up, you want to keep the bar pushing [higher].

"It's not about being the highest-paid guy; it's not about making a ton of money. I've made enough money where I'll be set for the rest of my life. But at the same time, you got to find that line where you're making a good amount of money but you're still keeping a lot of great players around you so you can win these Super Bowls and you're able to compete in these games."

Mahomes said it was a difficult balance between the two.

"I think it is for all these guys," he said. "I think you see the guys that are getting paid this last offseason -- they're trying to find that right spot.

"If you look at the greats in the league, they find that right spot where they're getting paid a lot of money but at the same time keeping a lot of these great players around. ... I understand you look at the team and you've got guys like Chris [Jones] and [L'Jarius] Sneed and even Travis [Kelce] -- all these guys that you need to keep around you to have these great teams. But at the same time, you want to make sure you're taking care of yourself."

Mahomes has won two Super Bowls to go with a third Super Bowl appearance and has at least reached the AFC Championship Game every season since he became Kansas City's starter. Mahomes has also won two regular season MVPs.

Chiefs GM Sees Kadarius Toney As No. 1 WR

May 8, 2023 9:13 AM

The Kansas City Chiefs are ready to embrace Kadarius Toney as their lead wide receiver.

After losing Tyreek Hill last offseason, they watched JuJu Smith-Schuster walk in free agency this spring.

"He's predominately been a guy that is a slot receiver, returner, runner -- a gadget guy, if you will -- but I don't know if there is a limit on his game because he has a vertical game," Chiefs general manager Brett Veach said of Toney.

"I don't know if [his collegiate team at Florida was] one that vertically pushed the ball down the field, and his time early on in New York, I don't know if they were a team that really vertically pushed the ball down the field."

Toney was a 2021 first-round pick of the New York Giants before he was traded to the Chiefs midway through last season.

Veach is counting on Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid to unlock Toney's talent.

"It's a fair question to [ask]: 'Has he ever played with a quarterback that likes to push the ball down the field?' We have a lot of high hopes for him," the GM said. "He was a first-round pick for a reason. There's a reason why we traded for him and we felt like he was first-round talent."

They re-signed Jerick McKinnon to a one-year deal and declined the fifth-year option on Clyde Edwards-Helaire.

McKinnon had the best receiving season of his career in 2022, when he was third on the team in receptions (56), fourth in receiving yards (512) and second in receiving touchdowns (9).

The Chiefs drafted Edwards-Helaire in the first round of the 2020 draft out of LSU and he led the team in rushing as a rookie with 803 yards.

Super Bowl LVII Was Most-Watched Telecast Ever

May 3, 2023 8:03 AM

According to revised data from Nielson, Super Bowl LVII was the most-watched U.S.-based telecast of all time.

The Kansas City Chiefs' 38-35 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles on Feb. 12 drew an average of 115.1 million viewers across all platforms, nearly 2 million more than Nielsen's previous announcement.

Fox Sports said in a statement that the change in ratings data was "the result of a thorough review by Nielsen that revealed irregularities in the encoding that enables Nielsen's measurement of TV viewing as well as in the measurement of out-of-home viewing."

Nielsen's figure includes people who watched the game on the Fox or Fox Deportes TV networks, or streamed the game on Fox digital properties or NFL+.
