Colts Make Offer To Manning

Oct 8, 2014 3:54 AM

The Colts and the agent for Peyton Manning, Tom Condon, met on Thursday and an offer was extended to the quarterback, according to team and league sources. The two sides met for hours, trying to accelerate a process that has been rumored for months. The offer is worth more than the four-year, $72 million contract that included $48.5 million in guaranteed money that Tom Brady signed with the Patriots in September, according to a source. The Colts want to make Manning the highest-paid player in the NFL, but they also want to show some financial restraint. Indianapolis president Bill Polian presented a pitch Thursday that the Colts want more cash flow to build the talent around Manning with a more aggressive offseason that could include a few key free agent signings, according to sources. The two sides are trying to consummate a deal before the league year ends at 11:59 p.m. March 3, when players will not be allowed to sign contract unless there is a new collective bargaining agreement.

Colts Ready To Make Manning NFL's Highest-Paid

Oct 8, 2014 3:49 AM

The Colts are prepared to make Peyton Manning the highest-paid player in the NFL. "Yeah, I think something will get done [with Manning], but it's hard to predict when," agent Tom Condon said Tuesday. Indianapolis owner Jim Irsay reiterated late last week that he still intends to make Manning, the only four-time MVP in league history, the NFL's highest-paid player. "I'm not going to get into any specifics in terms of the negotiations, but I've said before this is an unusual situation," Irsay said. "It's not a normal negotiation, his legacy and our relationship, it's very unusual. You hope it happens a lot, but it doesn't."

Irsay Issues Support For Caldwell

May 21, 2014 12:16 AM

Colts owner Jim Irsay issued support for Jim Caldwell on Tuesday in the wake of the team's playoff loss to the Jets. "Jim's done a really good job," Irsay said. "(People) forget he was on the field less than a year ago while we were hoisting the AFC championship trophy in front of our fans." Some have called for his dismissal after a disappointing season. Criticism, Irsay added, "is the nature of our business."

Caldwell Doesn't Regret Late Timeout Against Jets

Jul 16, 2014 2:59 PM

Indianapolis coach Jim Caldwell said Sunday he doesn't regret calling a late timeout that might have helped New York's winning drive in Saturday night's AFC wild-card playoff game. Caldwell called the timeout when New York, trailing by two points, had the ball at the Indianapolis 32-yard line with 29 seconds remaining. Television cameras caught Peyton Manning looking around, puzzling by the move. On the next play, Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez hit Braylon Edwards for 18 yards down the right sideline, pushing his team's field-goal try from 50-plus yards to 32. New York allowed the clock to reach three seconds left, then called their final timeout, and Nick Folk nailed the kick as time expired to seal New York's 17-16 victory. "You can look at it a number of different ways," Caldwell said. "One of the things, I guess it was (Santonio) Holmes who caught that (previous) pass, they were in field-goal range at that point in time. So you make a determination on what you want to do. "Obviously, we tried to do a decent job of taking a look at the field-goal kicker, see how they're doing during warm-ups, what's their range, all of those kinds of things. We not only do our own, but we do the opposition as well. We take a good look at that."

Saturday Playoff Games Earn Rating Milestones

Oct 4, 2014 2:54 AM

The first two games of the NFL postseason set a slew of milestones for NFL television ratings. Seattle's 41-36 upset of New Orleans on NBC earned the highest preliminary rating for the early Saturday wild card game in two decades. New York's last-second 17-16 victory over Indianapolis earned the highest rating since the NFL began airing prime-time wild card games in 2002.

Reggie Wayne had one catch for a single yard against the Jets on Saturday night. The Colts lost 17-16 and Wayne fumed after the loss. "It's bull. It's bull, man," he said "I give everything I've got no matter what. Every day, I give it everything. And ... one ball, that's all." Peyton Manning threw only one pass in Wayne's direction. "I shouldn't have even suited up," Wayne said. "I should have watched the game like everybody else. I was irrelevant."

Jets Defeat Colts On Folk's Game-Winning FG

Jul 11, 2014 9:44 PM

The Jets defeated the Colts 17-16 on Saturday night thanks to a 32-yard field goal by Nick Folk. Folk made the kick as time expired. Adam Vinatieri had hit what looked like a potential game-winning field goal with 57 seconds left to give Indianapolis a 16-14 lead. Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie returned the kickoff to near midfield and Mark Sanchez completed three passes, with a LaDainian Tomlinson run mixed in, to bring Folk well within field goal range. Tomlinson finished with 16 carries for 82 yards and two touchdowns. Sanchez went 18-for-31 with 189 yards and an interception. Manning, who beat the Jets in the AFC Title Game last January, went 18-for-26 with 225 yards and a touchdown. Pierre Garcon caught five passes for 112 yards and a touchdown. The Jets will travel to New England to face the Patriots next weekend.
