Robert Mathis To Retire At Age Of 35

Dec 30, 2016 1:57 PM

Robert Mathis will retire from the NFL this offseason at the age of 35.

"I want to walk away, not limp away. The rest of my body goes to my kids," Mathis told reporters on Friday.

Mathis, who is a five-time Pro Bowler, had a career-best 19.5 sacks just three years ago at age 32.

"Indy, this is my home. I am a Colt," he said. "I'm here forever. You aren't getting rid of me."

Andrew Luck Tries To Accept Blame For Colts Missing Playoffs

Dec 25, 2016 11:24 AM

Andrew Luck threw for 288 yards, but he also had two costly interceptions that the Raiders turned into touchdowns in the Colts’ 33-25 loss that knocked them out of playoff contention.

“We failed,” Luck said. “I feel like I failed. I feel like I failed my teammates.”

The Colts have struggled to put a competitive team around Luck but he has still tried to take responsibility.

"The interceptions were bad decisions and bad throws," Luck said. "The first one I thought I put it in a decent spot and the guy made a good play. The second one was bad on all levels. You can’t do that. Went from what was probably a guaranteed three points there. That was a pivotal moment in the game. There’s really no one else to blame but me."

Only Steelers Rank In Top-10 In Offense, Defense DVOA (Infographic)

Dec 21, 2016 10:38 AM

The NFL has very teams this season that excel in all facets of the game. Further evidence of this issue shows itself in the fact that there is only one team ranking in the top-10 in both Football Outsiders' Offensive and Defensive DVOA: the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Steelers are 9-5 after winning five straight games and must beat the Baltimore Ravens in Week 16 to ensure their place in the playoffs. Pittsburgh ranks third in total DVOA and first in Weighted DVOA.

Last season, the Seattle Seahawks, Carolina Panthers, Arizona Cardinals, Cincinnati Bengals and Kansas City Chiefs ranked in the top-10 on both sides of the ball. The Chiefs are the closest team to joining the Steelers in the top-10 in both Offensive and Defensive DVOA at 13th and 12th.

The Dallas Cowboys and New England Patriots rank first and second overall in DVOA as they rank second and third, respectively in Offensive DVOA but 20th and 19th in Defensive DVOA. The Atlanta Falcons rank first in Offensive DVOA, 27th in Defensive and fourth overall. The Green Bay Packers and Oakland Raiders have similar splits as the Cowboys and Patriots, while the Seahawks, Baltimore Ravens and New York Giants are the inverse of those teams with top-5 defenses and offenses below the NFL mean.

Colts Don't Anticipate Replacing Chuck Pagano, Ryan Grigson

Dec 16, 2016 11:37 AM

The Indianapolis Colts are in danger of missing the playoffs for the second consecutive season, but Jim Irsay doesn't anticipate replacing Chuck Pagano or Ryan Grigson.

In an interview with USA Today, the owner suggested that the team's chain of command will remain in place.

"Right now, I'm not anticipating making any changes," Irsay said. "That can always change. It always can when we're sitting down at the end of the year and evaluate things. But I'm just looking at seeing if we can win these next three games and get some luck from the football gods right now."

Frank Gore Passes Tony Dorsett For Eighth On Rushing List

Dec 6, 2016 8:57 AM

Frank Gore finished Monday night's game with 79 rushing yards, allowing him to pass Tony Dorsett for eighth place on the NFL's all-time rushing list.

"When your name gets mentioned with the great guys that played this game in the past, that's very big," Gore said. "I've been blessed to be playing this game. Twelve years in and I still love it. I'm still having fun. I just want to keep having fun and keep winning and see where we go from here."

Gore now has 12,789 career rushing yards.

Dorsett is the seventh player that the 33-year-old Gore has passed on the all-time rushing list this season. He's also passed Jim Brown, Thurman Thomas, Franco Harris, Marcus Allen, Edgerrin James and Marshall Faulk.
