Saturday, Goodell Shared Beers Before Lockout

May 18, 2014 9:26 PM

The day before the NFL entered a lockout, commissioner Roger Goodell and Colts center Jeff Saturday discussed the league's future over beers. "I called Roger and I just said, 'Hey man, I'm heading back to my hotel and I'd just like to talk to you,'" Saturday told NFL Network's Rich Eisen in an exclusive interview on NFL Total Access. "'I know we've got one more day and I just want to lay out what I feel is important to the players.'" Saturday called it a "heart to heart" conversation with Goodell, with each man explaining his side of the situation. "I wanted him to feel it from the players and understand that nobody's leading us to different areas. This is player-lead." Less than 24 hours later it was Saturday who would tell league officials that the union was pulling the plug on negotiations and decertifying. It was a decision he called the "toughest of his life."

Irsay Believes Peyton's New Deal Should Be Done

Oct 21, 2014 10:21 PM

Colts owner Jim Irsay isn't happy with the state of contract talks with Peyton Manning. Irsay believes the team's last offer to their franchise quarterback before the lockout was good enough to complete a deal. "It should get done," Irsay said. "If you ask me, it should have gotten done. You'll have to ask (Manning's agent) Tom Condon why it's not done." Manning is scheduled to receive $23 million next season as the Colts' franchise player, but the sides would rather agree on a long-term contract. "(Peyton had) always said, 'It's not about money to me, it's not about how much money I make. It's about making sure we have a great team, making sure I'm surrounded by other players that can be re-signed,'" Irsay told NFL Network's Albert Breer. "The Pierre Garcons, the Austin Collies. The young guys that make the difference. "The money's there," he added. "I'm already offering more than any player's being paid in the league. So why wouldn't it get done?"

Clark 'Happy' With Progress On Wrist

May 16, 2014 10:27 PM

Colts tight end Dallas Clark is still working to rehabilitate ligaments that were surgically repaired in his right wrist in the middle of last season. With the NFL's lockout of players, Clark said he's moved his recovery work from the team facility to a local sports medicine center in Indianapolis. "It's different, we're cut off from that," Clark said. "But I've got a great setup working at St. Vincent Sports Medicine and they have a great rehab and training facility, they pretty much do everything. I did the first six weeks of my rehab out in Tempe, Ariz. ... I just needed to get back home and everything's been great."

Wayne's Time With Colts Coming To An End?

Oct 15, 2014 11:53 PM

Reggie Wayne's contract with the Colts is set to expire after the season and there are whispers that he could leave the team. Wayne, 32, has been adamant about a long-term deal, which isn't something the Colts typically hand out to players in their 30s. Indianapolis could draft a wide receiver next month and hope that Wayne mentors him assuming there is a 2011 season.

Freeney Believes 'We'll Be Playing Football In 2011'

Oct 16, 2014 10:17 PM

Dwight Freeney doesn't believe the NFL will enter a work stoppage anytime soon. Negotiations are ongoing with the current collective bargaining agreement set to expire on Friday after two extensions. "I don't think either side wants no football. That's ridiculous," said the Colts defensive end. "I think they both understand that. Hopefully we can come to some kind of middle ground somewhere, somehow. We'll be playing football in 2011." Freeney added that players are in limbo, but must prepare as though things will go unchanged. "You want them to hurry up and get it over with, get this thing done so you can prepare for next year," he said. "I think a lot of guys understand this may drag on a little longer, but we have to prepare as if we're going to play in 2011."

Indy Could Lose $200M If Lockout Cancels Super Bowl

Aug 1, 2014 11:42 AM

The city of Indianapolis could stand to lose as much as $200 million if a work stoppage in the NFL cancels next February's Super Bowl. Still, the city is optimistic that the play will be played. "We absolutely mean what we've been saying and that is we believe common sense will prevail," 2012 host committee chairman Mark Miles said. "If there is a lockout or any other scenario, we're going to try and block that out and have blinders on because we believe we're going to have a game in 2012." Ball State professor Michael Hicks believes the city would lose $200 million, but some have put the number as high as $400 million.

Addai, Bullitt Receive Tenders From Colts

Aug 1, 2014 11:01 AM

The Colts have issued one-year tenders to running back Joseph Addai and safety Melvin Bullitt. Each player's agent confirmed the moves to The Indianapolis Star. Addai and Bullitt are among 15 Colts who could be tendered as restricted free agents even though the current labor uncertainty makes it unclear how many years of service a player needs before he's no longer restricted.
