Collie Never Considered Retirement

May 20, 2014 5:20 AM

Colts wide receiver Austin Collie never considered retirement despite suffering a pair of scary concussions last season. "I don't think for me there really was a decision," he said. "I didn't even entertain the thought of not coming back. I think the media made their own stories as far as what I was going to do. "But I always knew I was going to come back." Collie, a 2009 fourth-round draft pick, has earned $1.14 million in his first two seasons and has a 2011 base salary of $480,000.

Indianapolis Waiting And Watching Labor Progress

Jul 7, 2014 11:58 PM

The city of Indianapolis is waiting and watching the labor progress as the NFL lockout continues. The Super Bowl XLVI is scheduled to take place in February 2012 in Indianapolis. The residents of Indianapolis, the innocent bystanders in this labor mess, are counting on a league that is unreliable at the moment. They're excited about having the Super Bowl and they want to put on a great show and have the game return to the city in the future, and for good reason. The NFL estimates the Super Bowl has an economic impact of as much as $400 million. "It's our intention to be here and play a full season and we look forward to concluding the 2011 season here in Indianapolis," commissioner Roger Goodell said.

Many Were Surprised By Moore's Departure

Sep 3, 2014 1:32 AM

The departure of longtime Colts offensive coordinator Tom Moore came as a rather sudden surprise to many around the team. After Moore's name was removed from the team website, owner Jim Irsay told the Indianapolis Star, "I don't see [Moore returning next season] but I never say never. I do think this year it is pretty certain he is not going to be doing anything for us. I think he'll probably go into retirement and see how it feels." There had been some speculation that Moore was relieved of his duties with the team, in part, because he met with the Jets in early May to discuss their red-zone offense.

Collie Works Out, Not Thinking About Concussions

Jun 6, 2014 9:11 PM

Colts wide receiver Austin Collie has worked out with quarterback Peyton Manning and says he isn't thinking about the concussions he suffered last season. "I feel good," Collie told The Indianapolis Star. "I feel like my routes are crisp and I'm catching the ball well. I'm doing all the little things." After what Collie went through last season, Colts vice chairman Bill Polian wants to be sure his wide receiver is healthy before declaring him ready to go. "I don't know if you can say that (Collie is back) until he gets on the field and actually plays," Polian said. "Thus far, all the signs are positive." Collie said that was nothing he could have done to avoid the concussions he suffered during the 2010 season. "It was just playing football and unfortunately, that's what can happen," he said. "They were just two unlucky incidents that unfortunately I was in the middle of. "The last thing I want to do is hesitate at any given point. I try to put those things in the back of my mind and not worry about them."

Irsay Sets July 4 As Important Date In Talks

Jun 7, 2014 8:27 AM

Colts owner Jim Irsay and NFL general counsel Jeff Pash have pointed to Independence Day as an important date for football fans to circle. If the league and the players are at least on the way to a new collective bargaining agreement by that point, then there's good chance the season will come off without a hitch. "Well, I don't really want to be thinking about that one," said Irsay when asked what would happen if progress wasn't made by then. "I'm trying to be as optimistic as possible that we'll get a deal done." Several general managers said that getting a deal done by the early part of July would be necessary because of the time needed to sign free agents, draft picks and undrafted players in advance of training camp. “"You do it in whatever time they give you, but two or three weeks would be enough probably," Saints general manager Mickey Loomis said. "You could do it in less time, but with all the physicals and paperwork – and figuring out who you're going to get if you don't sign the first guy you want – you'd hope for as much time as possible."

Colts Confirm Moore Has Retired

Oct 11, 2014 6:25 AM

Colts veteran assistant Tom Moore has retired, owner Jim Irsay confirmed. Two other front office people are leaving as well and Irsay has decided to keep training camp at Anderson University -- if there is a camp. Colts officials had removed Moore's name from the coaching staff listed on the team website and he reportedly met with Tennessee officials about the offensive coordinator's job. "He's just at a point where it's extremely stressful physically," Irsay said. "It's been pretty taxing the last couple of years and he's at a point where he's worn out and tired at the end of the year."

Manning Underwent Second Neck Surgery

Oct 31, 2014 2:19 PM

Colts quarterback Peyton Manning underwent neck surgery on Monday for the second time in the past 15 months. Manning told The Indianapolis Star on Tuesday that the procedure was "minimally invasive" and he expects to make "a quick recovery." He had surgery at the same Chicago hospital in March 2010 to alleviate the problems a pinched nerve had caused for about four years.

Irsay Still Thinks Long-Term Manning Deal Is Possible

Sep 30, 2014 11:38 PM

Colts owner Jim Irsay still believes the team can sign franchise quarterback Peyton Manning to a long-term contract. Because of the lockout rules, Irsay hasn't talked much lately with Manning, whose seven-year, $99.2 million contract expired at the end of the 2010 league year. Irsay has previously said he expects to make Manning the league's highest-paid player, and he remains hopeful that a long-term agreement, separate from the $23.1 million franchise tender afforded to the quarterback in February. "Obviously, things have been put on hold, because of what you're permitted to do," Irsay said. "But I'm still confident that we can get a long-term agreement done. And I think we've probably added to our proposal to him, with our first two draft picks, both really great young offensive linemen (Anthony Castonzo and Ben Ijalana). I think we can get something done. "Again, it's been on hold, but it's something we can get back on track and get something done with him and (agent) Tom Condon, and that's what we're going to try to do on a long-term deal."

Delone Carter May Fill Role Colts Have Been Missing

Oct 11, 2014 5:32 AM

It has been a long time since the Colts have had a running back like Delone Carter, who they drafted in the fourth round of last month's NFL Draft. At 5-8 and 222 pounds, Carter looks like the kind of a guy that can move the pile and move the chains in short-yardage situations. That is an offensive area in which Indianapolis has struggled in recent years.

Cheerleader Sues Colts For Firing Her

Oct 31, 2014 4:26 PM

A former Colts cheerleader sued the team after she was fired over photos she took for Playboy. Malori Wampler told WTHR-TV that she believes her civil rights have been violated. The Colts terminated Wampler for breaking the squad's morals clause last November after someone sent the team photos showing her in body paint. Wampler's attorney, Kimberly Jeselskis, said the pictures were taken at a party thrown by Playboy, and that her client never posed for the magazine, but took pictures with guests at a golf outing. "Some of them made it on the website," Jeselskis said. The lawsuit claims the team discriminated against Wampler because she is a woman and Indonesian. The filing also points to Colts players who have broken the law but not received the same degree of punishment from the team. "It kind of represents the double standard in the workplace," Jeselskis said.
