Hayden Hurst Sought Out Dak Prescott To Show Support On Mental Health

Sep 23, 2020 8:41 AM

Hayden Hurst approached Dak Prescott after Sunday's Atlanta Falcons-Dallas Cowboys game to express his support in the wake of what Hurst called "disgusting" comments made by Skip Bayless about Prescott's opening up about his mental health.

Prescott recently shared in an episode of "In Depth with Graham Bensinger" that he sought help in the offseason for anxiety and depression brought on by the death of his older brother, Jace, and the coronavirus pandemic. Jace Prescott died by suicide in April. The quarterback's mother died of colon cancer in 2013.

Bayless said on his "Undisputed" show, "I don't have sympathy for [Prescott] going public with, 'I got depressed' and 'I suffered depression early in COVID to the point that I couldn't even go work out.' Look, he's the quarterback of America's team."

Hurst has been open about attempting suicide and dealing with anxiety and depression.

"To be totally honest with you, when I saw what Skip Bayless said, it just really upset me -- that Dak had the courage to come out and talk about that and how it affected his family, how it affected him -- and those [Bayless] comments, I thought, were just disgusting," Hurst said. "For a guy to come out and talk about that topic and use his platform to try and help and save lives, I've got nothing but respect for him because I know how hard it is going through stuff like that.

"It hit my family hard. My uncle killed himself. My cousin killed himself. And I had my own stuff with addiction and my attempted suicide. I know how much courage it takes to come out and talk about that. And for a guy like [Bayless] to blast Dak on his show, on national television, I think that's just wrong. So I wanted to go up to Dak and talk to him and tell him how much I appreciated it."

Dontari Poe Becomes First Cowboys Player Ever To Protest During Anthem

Sep 14, 2020 9:33 AM

The Dallas Cowboys had never had a player protest during the playing of the national anthem -- until Sunday.

Dontari Poe, who signed as a free agent this offseason, vowed he would kneel and did. He was the only player to do so.

Assistant defensive line coach Leon Lett, along with defensive linemen Antwaun Woods and Aldon Smith, placed a hand on Poe's shoulder.

Jerry Jones has made clear his preference for players to stand during the anthem, with their "toes on the line," and a few years ago threatened to cut any player who protested.

Cameron Erving also left the loss with a left knee injury and will miss time.

Dak Prescott Sought Treatment For Anxiety, Depression

Sep 10, 2020 5:10 PM

Dak Prescott sought help in the offseason for anxiety and depression brought on by the death of his older brother, Jace, and the coronavirus pandemic.

"When you have thoughts that you've never had, I think that's more so than anything a chance to realize it and recognize it, to be vulnerable about it," Prescott said. "Talked to my family, talked to the people around me simply as I did at the time. Some of them obviously had dealt with it before, was able to have those conversations and then reach out further just to more people.

"I think being open about it and not holding those feelings in was one of the better things for me."

Prescott discussed the death of his brother, who killed himself in April.

"I mean, obviously tears and tears and tears," Dak Prescott said on the show. "I mean, I sat there and tried to gather what had happened and wanted to ask why for so many reasons. ... And as much as you want to ask why as much as this, I mean, I know my brother, and as we said, he had a lot of burdens on him."

The Dallas Cowboys have signed Randy Gregory to a one-year contract extension through 2021.

The defensive end was conditionally reinstated last week. The deal includes a $200,000 signing bonus.

Dallas and Gregory agreed to a similar extension last season, but the NFL rejected it because suspended players cannot sign new contracts.
